How hard are the XE-R cam lobes on the valvetrain?

Default How hard are the XE-R cam lobes on the valvetrain?

I'm considering a couple new cams to replace my TR224 and I'm wondering what the longterm affects of running a COMP XE-R or faster lobe will have on spring longevity, or valve seats, etc. Will I have to replace the springs every 10k or less? I like the faster lobes because of better idle quality and vacuum.

The harder lobes will also make better power under the curve. As for changing springs ever 10k, I would say they should last at least 15k. Best thing to do is have a spring swap tool, and pull one spring every 10k miles and test the pressure. If it is within spec, put it back on, if the pressures are low, replace them.

OK, that's a good idea. My car's not a daily driver so racking up a lot of miles isn't really a huge issue anyway. Thanks.

Doesn't the TR224 have XER lobes?

Nope, I think they even have less lift than the XE-high lift lobes.

The TR224 is roughly equivalent to the XE-R lobes. Both are hard on the valvetrain. You just need to watch the springs as suggested.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I was thinking that Thunder uses COMP lobes and figured that it was probably just an XE. But I've never been told anything by Thunder for sure.
