View Full Version : One day engine bay makeover

05-01-2012, 08:44 PM
So I decided it was time to clean up the bay. Took me about 8 hours total between filling holes, moving grounds, sanding, prepping, painting. The PCM wire mod was previously done before this. I think it came out pretty good for rattle can and painting outside with some wind to boot! Thoughts?

One more for good measure ;]

That looks a lot better, did you clear it too?

I need to do this.

Looks great hope to get mine looking that way pretty soon

05-01-2012, 11:19 PM
thanks! I wish i had more before pics on this computer, the towers were pretty bad beforehand. And yeah, 2 light coats of clear and one somewhat heavier. Definitely could have been better without the wind but for 30 bucks and a days work. It's a good improvement i think

What did you use to fill the holes? I'm planning on stripping down most of the engine bay soon. I was just going to sand the rough spots and spray it, but now I'm thinking I want to fill in all the holes too.

Signifigant improvement. Is the passanger side strut tower blochy? Or am I seeing things.

I think you're just seeing things maybe from the angles in the pic, its pretty uniform color all around.

As far as hole filling I used 3m bondo plastic metal. Dries pretty quick to sand, like I said i did it all in a day

I think it looks good, working on mine now, i plan just to do all the prep and tow it to my painter just to hit the shock towers/front suport, i think i will hold off on the fire wall untill the motor swap, did you use a high temp clear?also did you use that perfect match spray paint, think its dupicolor but its good stuff

05-05-2012, 07:23 AM
Also did you use any adhesion stuff?

05-05-2012, 10:40 AM
thanks on the car compliments!

as far as the STB. it was originally red but it just seemed out of place so I sprayed it black. we'll see where that changes next hah

i sanded, threw on some adhesion promotor, and then that duplicolor perfect match you were talking about, instead of silver metallic though I think it was like ultra silver metallic, just to get a little more pop under there hopefully. It defiantely could have been sanded down a lot better and smoother to really make it shine like some of the engine bays guys have done. as far as the clear coat I used engine enamel high temp clear

05-14-2012, 05:42 PM
That's an amazing improvement.

05-15-2012, 07:04 AM
Yeah looks great, you must have been busting your butt in those 8 hours though, i have 8 hours in painting brackets and crap like that, i should start spraying the bay this week, i have decided that dupicolor works so well im just going to paint it, did you use any primer at all?

05-15-2012, 10:16 AM
Hey is it a pain to remove the entire air box assembly/tray from top of the rad support?

05-15-2012, 01:44 PM
Striker its very easy to do, its a few bolts, everything is pretty easy to take off,

05-15-2012, 02:19 PM
looks really good. wish i had enough motivation to clean mine up.

05-15-2012, 02:44 PM
Looks great!

Striker its very easy to do, its a few bolts, everything is pretty easy to take off,

I thought it was a bunch of clips that connect to the top of the rad?

05-15-2012, 05:19 PM
Once you pop off the lid there are 4 bolts, 2 on each side that hold the lid on, thats all i remeber anyway, i just took mine off a week ago, if it takes you more than 10 mins you might be a retard lol, i dont remember any clips though,

06-06-2012, 12:25 PM
It's not as shiny as I would like, because I didnt bust my butt too much on the sanding ;] thanks tho guys. no primer.. i went with the adhesion promotor, and then sprayed a light coating of black for a base before the silver. I tried spraying the silver first and it wasn't really showing up well. Once the black was on there, the silver went on nice
