Hey guys, still pretty new here, so don't be to rough haha. I searched around here and on the interwebz and didn't find to much.
I have a 96 Camaro with a 3800/T5. It's got 80k, and I'm pretty sure the 2nd gear synchro is shot. I just had the clutch replaced maybe 4k ago. The car when revved up in 1st shifting into second will grind once in a while, and every once in a while when downshifting from around 4k into 2nd, the car won't go into gear. These instances are rare and only happen once in a while when I'm driving "spiritedly" on some country roads.
From what I can tell, its the 2nd gear synchro causing this, and from what I saw a full rebuild will cost around 500 just for parts, meaning at least another 500 in labor. I was considering getting a junkyard tranny, as I can source one for 100-200.
So here's my question, are third gen t-5's potentially swappable into a 4th gen, and if I got a 4th gen t-5 from a 3.4L, could I just swap the bellhousing or whatever from my tranny and be good to go? My big issue is that 3rd gen T5's are very common in the junkyards around me, as are 3.4L's, 3.8's are not nearly as common unfortunately. I know this is a v8/LS1 based website, but just wondering if anyone with a Third gen would know, I'm not a transmission guy haha. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
