Racer's Lounge - Idiots trying to buy your car

I love my car but sometimes it gets very frustrating trying to drive it and enjoy it.
I can deal with the "used to have one just like it", "too bad it's not a big block", "too bad it's not a 4 speed", and "is it a real SS?", but my big pet peeve is when a person asks if it's for sale and I tell them no. But they insist and I throw out my "I would be retarded not to sell for this" bottom dollar.
Then they get pissed at me like I was the one who was trying to get them to buy it. :gtfo:
I drove the car to the office this morning and first thing a guy came in asking who owned it and if it was for sale. I told him it was not for sale as I have owned it 10 years and am attached to it. He kept insisting "everything is for sale" so my exact words were "well it is but not for any price a sane person would pay". He kept on about it. I finally told him just leave his name and number and I would think it over. While writing he was already starting in: "What engine does it have?" "so it's not numbers matching?" "so it's not a true SS?" and closed with "well it still needs paint and I know what these are worth". :guns:
If I list my car for sale for an outrageous price, feel free to heckle my ad. But if you come into my place of work, I tell you it's not for sale, and straight up tell you I won't sell it for less than I could duplicate it with upgrades...don't get pissed at me I'm not going to let you buy it for $4000 or some shit.
My uncle offered to trade me straight across for his '99 C5 6 speed, fully loaded with z51 suspension with 86k miles on it and I turned that down without a question...so no you won't buy my car for the 4 digit price it is really "worth" on the market.
Any of you guys starting to have to deal with this?

When I was in college I had a 1972 GS455 Skylark, not #'s matching but it still had the buick 455 in it. It was painted to look like a GSX. TONS of people would ask me about it and try to get me to sell it for 9-10K. It was my Dad's car and he basically gave it to me, we worked on it when I was growing up so it had sentimental value. And yes, they would always get pissed off when I told them I wouldn't sell it for half of what it was worth.

Exactly, just because my car is "worth" $6-8k on a good day doesn't mean I am going to sell it to you for the $4k I paid for it after all the work I've done making it how I wanted it to be.
Honestly, unless some absolute shit for brains cash chunker wants to toss out $17k+, I have no interest in selling my car. I know my car inside and out and the only way I'm starting over building another one is if I have the cash to do it better and on a 1970 body. I know very well what my car is "worth", that's why it isn't for sale.

Sounds like an awesome car, I would have loved to do an LS swap on mine but ended up giving it back to my dad when I bought my first Fbody.
A guy here has a 1971 with a 383 stroker LS1 in it and a T56. I wish I could afford it.

I'm on the same boat, I get this all the time and it's pretty annoying if you ask me.
Couple months ago I'm driving and some dude tells me, "I'll give you 10 stacks right now for it," no thanks maybe never.
And just last week some dude pulls up next to me at the stop light and asks, "is it fast?" It's decent. "How much you want for it?" Give me 20 g's and it's yours.

I get lots of comments when stopped at traffic lights and at gas stations with my '71. Usually it's just friendly conversation, "I used to have one, wish I still had mine, etc." Being a Nova rather than a Chevelle, there were far fewer that came with BBCs, so nobody really says anything bad about it being a small block. I don't get many negative comments about it being an auto either, probably because many of the people that quickly glance at the interior in a non-car show type setting aren't extremely knowledgeable about cars and may think that the ratchet shifter is a manual. Either way, negative comments about engine size or trans type don't really mean anything to me, since these people are merely basing their opinions on what THEY prefer, and thus assuming that you somehow "settled" for something lesser, because they are not dynamic enough to conclude that you may have actually wanted the specific options or parts that you chose (some of them would probably have a stroke if I told them that the car USED to be a manual, but is now an auto, and I couldn't possibily be happier about it!)
As for the sale price thing, it always baffles me how some people seem to think they can talk you into selling your car (that isn't for sale in the first place) and then start picking the car apart, offer you some stupid-low price, and then get offended when you say no. If you want to haggle, go find someone that is ACTUALLY selling their car, maybe they'll be motivated to sell and willing to negotiate. How can you expect someone to be motivated when their car isn't even for sale?
Then there is the other end of the spectrum; unsolicited offers of crazy money for your car. Last summer I was coming home from a car show and some guy at a red light told me he'd give me $25k on the spot for my '71. All I could do was laugh......I mean, the car was restored about 15 years ago and is still super nice, it's probably worth about $18k in my region currently, but this was at night on a dark road and the guy could barely even see the car, much less tell how it drove. For all he knew, it could be missing half the frame to rust and packed with bondo covered by fresh paint. Who makes an offer like that? I told him that it wasn't for sale, but that if he's willing to spend money like that, then he should have no problem finding one even nicer than mine.

Sounds like an awesome car,
Not really anything special at all. But I couldn't buy another Malibu, convert it to SS everything (from 12 bolt to dash), lsx swap it, and replace rust and interior parts for what it is "worth". And that doesn't even include heads/cam/stall/etc. Plus then I'm back at square one fixing other people's hidden mistakes and stuff.
I would value my car at ~$6k in this economy, maybe get $8k for it if I fixed a couple other small things and waited for the right buyer. If it were painted pretty well I might even get $10k. Any less than almost double that isn't worth me getting rid of it...and for that a person could buy a clean big block car that the lay man would consider "show worthy".
It's worth more to me than to anyone else, and it's priced accordingly. Don't like it? Find one that's really for sale.

Haha...This^^^
I'm in the same boat as you guys. My dad and I built my truck together out in the garage and it was my first vehicle when I was 16. It holds a lot of sentimental value to me so it is always hilarious when people ask if it is for sale. Mostly because they don't have a clue what they are looking at when they ask how much I want for it.

I definitely relate. I was the same way with my GS. Now if someone came up and offered me dealer blue book sale price for my vette I'd take it in a heartbeat because I can always get another one.
Edit: Yeah I forgot to mention that I got my Vette from someone who was desperate for cash and I would make out pretty well even selling it a little lower than book.

I am the same way about my 99 Silverado. It's a very clean well maintained truck that I got for a good price. If someone offered me book I would actually be making profit and would be dumb not to take it and find another one.
It's different when it's something I've tailored to my tastes and have had for over 10 years.

My old setup was probably worth 10K right now.... When asked if it was for sale and I said no and they continued... I said sure, "15K".
If someone would have paid 5K more than it was worth I would have bought a bone stock low mileage pewter Ws6 for 9K and still had 6K to dump in it. I would have came out with a car in better shape, less mileage, a true Ws6, and a better setup. Would be dumb not to and they would be dumb to pay that for it.
Stupid people are everywhere.

A little bit off topic; still involves idiots.
I also find it humorous when people will say "Man my old xxxx would put that car to shame" (referring to my vette) having no idea how much faster vehicles are these days compared to the older muscle cars when stock. My GS probably had around 375 crank HP (455 CI Cammed, 4Barrel 850 carb headers ETC ETC) and would run a mid 14 at best on a good day... I'm sure you've heard the same thing when people find out your car has a 5.7L LS1 in it.

I had one kid stop at my house in a bare bones base model beat up 06 v6 dodge charger and ask if i would sell my car (cts v).
05 cts v 10K miles
LME built 402, AFR heads
F1 Procharger
Custom fuel system
Built 9 inch
800rwhp etc....
I politely told him no but he insisted. I told him honestly he wouldn't give me what i needed to have for the car, but he insisted so i told him realistically what i needed for the car.
me: "give me 45 and its yours".
idiot: "OK, ill trade you this car (v6 charger) and YOU give me 10 on top" (I was like wtf?)
me: "nah you're going to have to give ME money on top"
idiot: "u aint askin but 45 for your car and u know this is worth more than that" I almost flipped lol
me: "nah son 45 GRAND not 45 hundred" ( he shit himself lol)
Idiot: "come on man be real"
I went on to tell him i had offer higher than that, anyway he left all butt hurt LOL
kid didn't even know what a V series is plus I didnt want to tell him what all the car had done to it because he seemed kind of shady.

This is so true. I was actually surprised today when I got to work, this kid that's all into imports asked if my car had an LS1 or an LS6 so I stopped to talk with him a bit. He actually was pretty knowledgeable. I was expecting him to offer me to race his stock integra lol
"Does it have a HEMI in it?" That's the first thing anyone ever says to me. I always reply by saying "no, f**k the Hemi I got something bigger than that." I always thought it'd be great if cars like ours suddenly became worthless and no one gave a damn about them; sure it would be bad financially but I'm sure we're not in these cars for investments purposes and at least they'd leave us alone.
As for offers to buy, I still get notes but I avoid cruises and stuff because I'm so sick of it already...

I don't get bothered too much with my car now, but in highschool/after grad I used to get harassed all the time about my 72 cheyenne SWB. Of the dozens of people that harassed me, one sticks out. An old man used to stop by my work at least once a week, with a low ball offer. Once he rolled up in a late 80s(?) Convertible lebaron and offered something like $500 on top.
"Son, do you have any idea what that is out there? Boy, that's what we call a cock wagon. You get all kinds of tail in a cock wagon like that, more than that old pickup."

I kinda do, while I have never built a car completely by hand myself. I did help my grandfather rebuild his 57 Thunderbird a few years back. It isn't mine but I did have some pride in the work I did, while learning a lot in the process, and put a big smile on both my grandfathers and my face the first time we cranked it.

I had a guy at work tell me he would give me 6k for mine. Then asked if it was for sale. I told him it was for sale for the right price, but 6k wasn't near that price. He asked how did I figure. I told him that for one, I just spent 3k on a new transmission, about to spend around another 3k on other stuff. So 6k was closer to 16k not enough. He then proceeded to tell me he could buy a better one for less. I told him to go ahead and buy a better one.

This is why we never take our 69 to any shows, and if we do, its all the way in the back with the top up and hood closed. It never stays unattended in a parking lot either for fear of damage from retards, so ive never had any notes left behind. The car has more than double in parts and labor value in it than what its worth- exactly why it isnt for sale. People always ask if it has a 400 and give you the weirdest look when you say its an ls swap and 6 speed, either because they dont know what it is, or out of disgust. Little do they know, its also a clone :jest:
The question that bothers me the most is "How much do you have in it?" only because i have to sit there and break down every damn dollar spent to justify...
I also dont like how its a magnet for reckless drivers. Ive never been cut off or nearly side swiped more times in any other car in my life. Nearly every time I drive it theres a near miss....
But its all worth it in the end :D

You shouldn't even tell them it's an LS series...When asked you should just say it's a 364 (assuming you haven't done anything to up the displacement). They will probably look at you like you just punched them.

One benefit of driving my 6 I guess is I don't have anyone asking me stupid sale questions. Even if they did I'd flat out tell them no. I just got it recently, I have no intention of selling it.
What does irk me a little is when people ask if it is a v8 and I say no, then they go degrading the car and/or me over it. I like it for what it is now, and have big plans for it in the future, and that's all that matters. MY car, not theirs, so they can shut it.
So many people just need to mind their own business.

Just messin with you man
Already been covered...but it's an LS2. LOL. So 364 is the correct number. ;)

with something like that, rather than argue....pick a price. everything has one.
with me, i've already had a half dozen people ask me if my gt's for sale. i don't hesitate. i look right at em, and tell em that they can have it for $38k. if someone actually gives me that, then i won't miss it, 'cause that's more than enough to pay off what i owe, and put a VERY nice down payment on a 013 boss302.

I'd sell any of my cars for the right money - I don't think I've ever had someone just come up and offer on any of them.
I have never gotten a note either. I've only had the vette since december though.
I imagine no one tells me it slow because of the big ole cam sound and shake ahaha, especially rolling cut outs open.

when i sold my SS it was a weird situation as i was at sonic hanging out with some friends and a guy comes up and asks if i want to sell...."sure for the right price" then he calls his brother to come to sonic
he gets there checks the car out (cammed 99 ss with all the bolt-ons/built 4l60 with a stall/spray/18 inch tt2's.....110k miles) and i really didnt want to sell it but earlier during the week i was talking with a friend about what we would take to sell our cars and i said 14k being thats exactly what i had in it
dude asks me how much i want so i tell him then he comes back with "ok man i'll have the cash monday" he was not kidding and called me a 8 am and paid me cash......i wish i would not have sold it but it is hard to say no to 14 thousand dollars cash

When i sold my 87 monte carlo ss aerocoupe i had 1 guy checking it out who asked "now why should i buy this car over the 88 mustang gt down the street thats $500 less?"
I laughed and just said hey if you want a mustang go buy it!
I had that 4 sale locally for 3500 back in `04 and only had a few nibbles, put it on ebay after 2mos and bam it sold for 4700 within the week. The guy came to pick it up and was psych`d about its condition and price he paid.
When i bought my `96 z28 it was at a car show and the guy had just pulled in and put a 4sale sign on the windshield. I talked to the guy for a bit about the car then started talkin him down from 11k, got him to 9k and we shook hands on it cause i had to run home to grab the loot. Right after we shook hands an evesdropper pipped up and said "no way he talked you down to 9k?? I`ll pay you 12.5k for it right now!"
i could see the guy kicking himself in the ass but he looked at me and said sorry guy we already shook hands on it. Phew! I should of flipped it but owel

Had a guy recently going around my neighborhood paving driveways go out of his way to walk down to my house and ask if I wanted to sell, few people I've ran into over the year I've had it have done the same. I don't mind, I take it as a compliment, means all my elbow grease from waxing, polishing, washing, vacuuming, etc., etc., is paying off.

Uhh, I've seen total pieces of shit go for 3-5k. Your smoking crack if you think your running driving car that is DDable is less than 18k easy. Lol. Maybe it's where I am but rust bucket'd hunks of fuck go for 2k all day.

Whenever I take out our split bumper 73 Camaro I get the usual chit chat at red lights, gas stations and stuff. "What year is it?" "what's under the hood" blah blah blah, but never people trying to buy it. Then again I won't even leave the thing in a parking lot 10 feet from where I'm standing.
My 99 WS6 that most people on here know me from I got lucky with. It was the same thing as a few of you, had the car for a few years, EVERYTHING on the car was done to my liking, and then I did a complete rebuild. Heads/cam, fast 90/90, full exhaust, almost full suspension, everything.. I got bored with it and threw it up on ebay for $14,500 (89K miles). Kid called me up, asked how much I wanted, so I replied "$14,000." "Okay I'll have to see when I can get up there and pick it up." Came up and got the car for $14! Awesome part was it seemed like it already meant as much to him as it did me... almost. :jest:
When my Dad was 20 he had a 71 Camaro, all done up. It was sitting out front and a woman rang the doorbell, "Is the car for sale?" my grandparents politely replied that it was not. Next morning it was gone, stolen.
But you want to talk about people giving STUPID offers, and trying to tell you how much YOUR car is worth? You don't have to tell me!

Yeah he's a fucking toolbox
I found his posts quite entertaining.
On topic, my old man has a '65 Goat thats been in the family for 30+ years. It's in need of a good restoration (has everything for the car) and the recent economic crunch has put a hold on getting it done, but he's too attached to let it go. The original owner actually contacted him and wanted to buy the car back. The guy is fairly well off and offered a ridiculous amount of money to buy the car back, but my dad turned him down. The guy was at least reasonable about it; he's had other offers of 3 and 4k dollars.

motor has dart heads/intake/mechanical cam and longtubes. pulls like a train

money for your car. Last summer I was coming home from a car show and some guy at a red light told me he'd give me $25k on the spot for my '71. All I could do was laugh......I mean, the car was restored about 15 years ago and is still super nice, it's probably worth about $18k in my region currently,
There's a guy I work with that's the same type. I have an old LT1 camaro, and he offered $10,000 on the spot lol! It's just a bolt on car with an SS hood. He was just trying to show off to his buddies. I know exactly how much he makes (same rank) and I know he lives in debt trying to live above his pay grade. Who does he think he's playing. I didn't even dignify his bogus offer with a rebuttal.
My car isn't nearly as desirableas an older chevelle or some of the cars ya'll are talking about. Just saying that people like to throw out bogus money to get their own dick hard. Offering 10,000+ for a 3-4,000 LT1 hahaha

Guess I have gotten some what lucky and haven't had this happen much. The only time I can remember someone wanting to by my car was a kid that worked for me a few years ago. Not long after he started he told me he wanted to buy my car and asked how much. I told him I wasn't interested in selling and that he didn't have any money. I was also giving this guy a ride to work for awhile because he didn't have shit to his name. Well he would always say he wanted to buy it so I told him for 15K I would sell it knowing that my car was worth way less than that. I figured it might get him to stop asking. Well he ended up getting in a pretty bad car accident where he was a passenger and got a pretty big insurance settlement. He then started in on buying it so I told him I would sell it for 15k cash. He never bit though:( He ended up buying an avalanche and some 24" rims. He blew through just over $60,000 dollars in less than 6 months, lost his job and last I heard he was back in jail.
Only car I use to get a lot of people asking to buy it was a 86 Grand Prix that I had right out of high school. It was a pretty nice car with rims. I always had people asking if I would sell it. Not sure why they liked it so much. It was a good looking car but I didn't think it was that special at the time.

heavy set black chick and her family in a v6 charger are speeding down the highway.
they had to be going 90mph, b/c i was going 80mph. so i speed up to the same speed and im about 50 feet behind them when she floors it. i guess :D
so for SH**s and giggles i catchup look at them and shaking my head at them, floor it.
this process repeated a few times as they would keep getting up beside me and taking off.
eventually the highway came to a stoplight this is the conversation:::
Me: How are you gonna try and outrun a v8 camaro with a v6 charger?
Chick: I dont know but i was gonna try. Let me driver that charg -er camay-ro.
Me:.....uuuuh. no.

I pop my hood in a fast food location parking lot after going to the junkyard with some friends, to install a cap/cover and take a quick picture. My friends wander inside. Group of people wander over out of nowhere and one guy says:
Him: "Yo dawg, is it for sale?"
Me: "Huh? You mean the car?"
Him: "Yea, you selling it?"
Me: "Nope."
Him: "Oh, cause it looks like you're selling it..."
Me: "Nope. Not selling it."
Him: "Is it fast?"
Me: "Not really..."
Him: "Oh... Ok. Is it stock?"
Me: "..... Yep." *I close the hood*
Him: "Oh... Ok then..." *him and his pals wander off, apparently disappointed that my car was stock after not noticing any of the mods, and quietly talking about how it would have been better if it was modded...*

Had this exact thing happen to me with one of my trucks. 04 6 speed ford diesel. Kid asked how much cash. Being a smartass I told him 15K would probably take it home, knowing that it needed tires, injectors, windshield, and some other stuff. Well needless to say I was at the bank the next weekend signing my title over. I had 10 in the truck as it sat that night. The ironic part is the truck spends more time at my shop then his house cause he can't keep it running.

I worked at a dealer and occasionally we had a few older cars in showroom. I can't count how many times someone would have a "my buddy had one of these" stories. Funny how it was always a ls7 chevelle or a hemi convertible cuda etc. didn't think they made that many total but it appears they were all sold in my small town. but my favorites were the "never made cars" like a camaro with a factory 454.... I think it was a 65'. or a "special order" chevelle cause his dad had a friend a GM and got a 502 in it.

I've always seen it as disrespect if i'm asking someone how they're doing and they look at me and say nothing or go immediately to talking about something they want from me. I'll be having a conversation with one of my friends at work or something and he'll be like, "YO! You wanna sell me ya car?" I say "Nah, man." and he just walks off. **** gets old. Yes and no.. I mean I've had mine for almost 10 years now too and I've dumped quite a bit of money into it. But there is this one kid a the weekly meets that is CONSTANTLY bugging me to buy my wheels. If I had $2000 saved up to blow on something, I'd tell him $850 with tires and I'd use that as a DP on some CCW's. But otherwise, my car doesn't really draw much of a crowd. Getting tired of the cliche' 68 Camaros and 65 Mustangs. People around here seem to have such a hard on for em and, frankly, I'm tired of em. That and the old guys who look at it like "It's got a computer in it, it's too complicated, I don't understand this." or "No flowmasters?" or "Is that a TreeFiddy?" ... :bang: Almost.
Just a couple hours ago had this kid at my buddy's ice cream place asking me about my car.
"So what's done to it?" Pretty much everything...
"How much of a lift on the cam?" ... 650
"What's it make at the wheels?" 440/410 ...
"What year is it?" 2000....
While I'm shotgunning answers out as fast as he asks them and I'm thinking "Heh.. Got any other little "trap questions" for me?"
But I'd LOVE a C5, but I don't think I'd ever see another car with this much money in it again for a LONG LONG time. I don't feel like re-modding another LS1/6 car. Although a C5 would be a nice venture and a clean slate.
