General Maintenance & Repairs - 00 TA ac problem

I have a 00 TA. My ac will only blow out the floor and dash vents (always at the same time). It doesnt matter what setting i have it on, the AC stays on. I am guessing that since the AC stays on, even when the dial is turned to heat, that i dont have a vacume problem.
Would it be the unit in the dash with the 3 knobs or is there another control unit that tells it what to do?

Hot/cold is controlled by a cable attached to the temperature dial and a flapper in the duct work. With the car off, you should hear that flapper seat shut as you move the dial from one extreme to another.

If you can't change the vents, that's 100% a vacuum problem. The dial that does that selection controls the vacuum lines.

was there anything done to the car around the time when this problem started?

Nothing was done to it.

If the vents are controlled by vacume only then why does the ac compressor stay on even when the knob is on a heat setting like the defrost vent or floor vent. Shouldn't that turn the ac comp off?

The switch is combo vacuum/electrical. Vacuum for the vents, electrical to kick on the A/C.

OK....but that still doesn't answer my question. What would be causing my problem. I find it very unlikely that both the vacume and electrical part of my switches went out at the same time.

Maybe I should ask.....what do I need to replace to fix my problem?

Your A/C will always turn on when you have the dial on defrost of some sort- either full defrost or floor+defrost. It is made to do that to help clear your windshield. Also, just because you turn the knob to heat doesn’t mean it will kick off you’re A/C. It doesn’t work like that.
So, try turning your knob to just vent (without A/C) and the compressor should shut off.

I will try that again but best I remember I tried on all settings and it stayed on.
I will post what the outcomes is.

If you do a search, you'll se lots of oter threads on this stuff.

If I recall correctly, you situation is usually a problem with the man vacuum line under the hood. Done any work lately where a line might have been disconnected?

If it's not the main, you'll need to trace all of the lines and test them with a vacuum pump.
