Generation III Internal Engine - Anyone running a big cam in a 5.3? G5x4, MS4, etc..

Any issues? WHP numbers? Im swapping a 5.3 in my ranger and will swap it to a Ls1 down the road (already have the shortblock) Soo i would like to run all the valve train, pushrods, ETC, and a G5x4 in the 5.3. i have the oppertunity to buy a g5x4 for cheap, soo why not? :cool:

I'm not sure what your tolerance for street manners are, but that'd be a pretty rowdy cam for a street car in a 5.3. There's not a lot of local guys playing that hard with the 5.3's, but a buddy is running an ASA cam (226/236 .525/.525 on a 110) in his car.

anyone else? I would at the very least run a cam with .580 lift in it. TR226 or TR228.

Just run a Comp Cam with the xer lobes, their 226 lobe has .585" lift.

Have a 226 / .585 in my Dakota. Makes almost zero low end power. You probably won't like it If you've got a heavy ranger, but I like it just fine, spins 7500 all day long. Don't have any dyno numbers for mine, and I don't care to, it's just a reliable fun truck I drive regularly.

If you run a cam grind with a tighter lsa that's advanced 2-4 degrees you'll make good low-end power with a 226/226.
Vents, what's the lsa and icl of your 226 cam ?

Those cams are borderline too big for LS1s so I can only imagine how they'd do in a smaller engine...

My friend (tripblackls1) runs a MS3 on a 113 in his turbo 4.8, I think it runs just fine.

It's ground on a 114 lsa, 110 icl is what the cam card says. Powerband kinda likes 3500-8000 ish (fuel cut) with the Vic Jr. Haven't taken it to the limiter yet, but it's still pulling hard at 7500. With a carb I'd suspect more rpms would be on the table. Personally, I like a ragged edge setup, but I don't know what you prefer. I have a trex in the garage, and thought about tossing that in the lil 5.3, but after this cam, i don't have a reason to. I did read a thread where another guy stuffed a trex in a 5.3 for an alcohol tube chassis 69 camaro that went mid 6's in the 8th, 2600# n/a. Maybe that helps? I'd guess my junk might make 340-60 ish at the wheels, maybe.
