Default Cam is in

I finally finished my cam install today, started up first crank and had good oil pressure. Valve train is actually quieter than it was before. I let it idle for about 10 min. then started backing it off the ramps and my temp gauge started going to redline..I then shut it off and started it back up a few min. later and it stayed at norma temp....is this alright?..Oh yeah and my check engine light was flashing, but I suppose it is from the cam..

Incorrect coolant filling process. It will eventually burp out the air the way you're doing it, just keep an eye on the coolant tank and be sure to add as necessary.
