Question 160 Thermostat

Can I use a 160 thermostat and adjust my fan temps and be ok? Or will I stay in open loop because the pcm will think the motor has not reached operating temp. Thanks

it was 75-80 today. hotlapping the t160 with 180Fan still netted 225F ECT.

on the drive home freeway it was dead on at 180F.

so its not all that great of a mod i guess.

I'm by far not the expert on this stuff, but I've never heard of anybody throwing a code after putting in a 160 thermostat. I put one in, and I never reset my fans, and I haven't throw any codes (I plan on resetting them thought).

I've read that with a 160 thermostat the engine temp runs about 175, the stock stat is 180, and the engine runs about 195.

Before the needle was always half-on half-off the 210 line on the gauge, after I put in the 160 stat it was just off the gauge. I did put in an aftermarket gauge and it runs about 175 - 180.

the problem I had was I trusted the stock gauge, I now have a 160 with two holes drilled in it. So it is a little colder. If you dont alter the fan temp it doesnt run much cooler than the stock stat.

You roll into open loop when ECT > 100F. So no worries on the
'stat unless it's extremely cold out and there is a lot of base
bypass (thermostat never fully closed). Which is not the case
on the Hype-Tech 160 as far as I've seen on my vehicle. With
drilled holes you might get there in arctic conditions but that's
not a problem down here in the swamp. I have one 3/32 hole
drilled in mine just for luck & bubbles.
