So just saying I was considering a project that required a transverse oriented gearbox and I really wanted to swap in an LSx with some considerable power (~450-500hp), what could I run? I know the F25/F35/F40s are only good for ~200-250lb-ftish, and there's pretty much no way I'm getting a G50 in there although I've heard those tend to get sketchy over 350hp anyways.

Are there any high power transverse applications out there?

Look for the LS7 Fiero thread. I'm pretty sure he's still using the G6 6 speed without issues.
