Default High pitched whine, like a bearing noise

Car has rungreat, took it for a drive and about 5-7 miles in it starts making a high pitched whine. Thought it was a belt idler pulley, so I tried to lube them and have changed them, no dice. It's not in the drive train as it does it standing still but not at idle, just above idle at about 1500-2000 and goes away under acceleration and returns when cruising. Ac belt is off the car, so I'm thinking either water pump or alternator. The ps fluid is full, no leaks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If the rain will stop I'll start the car without the belt on and see if it's still there.

That seams to be the culprit. I've never heard one make this noise. It's horrible. I spin it by hand and u can feel and hear where it's hanging.

Yeah that was the first thing that came to mind when i read your post. I hhad a 95 z28that did something similar to this to me. Mine gave me a warning before the squeel though that i didnt pay attention to. I noticed when i accerlerated my voltage meter went up to normal levels but at idle it would drop down to barely above red. Sure enough a few weeks after this started i got the squeel that souns alot like whhat youre describiing

A papertowel tube, to your ear, will give you a good idea where the noise is from.
Do this away from your neighbor's view.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but did you ever find out what it was? My ls1 is making a whine but it's not coming from the accessory drive or transmission. Thanks
