General LSX Automobile Discussion - Is it possible to put a HP limiter on a 02 SS?

I have an 02 SS with a cam, headers etc and once in a while I let other people drive my car or co-drive it in an autocross. It can be a hand full to an inexperienced driver so I was wondering is there a way I could rig up a switch or something to I can easily dial it back to about 3/4 HP when someone else drives?

That'd be cool, kind of like the old ZR1 valet key... The Boss with the 2 keys comes to mind too. I dunno though how you would do it.

i know in the ford world we would have three tunes... Kill...street... and valet...
valet wouldnt let it go above a desired rpm or speed

i don't think i'd let anybody drive it that would abuse it, or wasn't able to handle the power personally.

Frost has a dual tune pcm.

You can make some sort of modified throttle stop that will prevent you from going full throttle.
Just shove the floor mat up under the gas pedal I've heard of people losing races because of poor fitting floor mats sliding forward.

this is your easiest and cheapest solution.

If you put a dual pcm in it you can have a detuned or valet tune available.

If somebody told me they thought they lost a race becuse of the floor mat... I'd have to call rice on on them. What a lame excuse. Even if it did get in the way of the gas pedal no self respecting person would say it.
To the OP. Drill a hole thru the throttle bump stop, tap some threads and install a set screw. Adjust it so the throttle only opens to 75%.

Sure you can, just set the rev limited to like 4500 and boom you have a lot less horsepower seeing as how your engine probably makes all of it's power in the high 5000 range.
Or if you want to really reduce the power, set the timing really low and make it rich. Along with the lower rev limited you can have a pussy of a car.

Thanks guys this is very helpful.
Dutinss you are right it's not the best idea to let others drive my car. Autox is a great way for them to forget about life for a day and for the younger guys spend time with a man that actually gives a rip about them.
When Frost did my tune I asked him to dial back my rev limiter to 6000 but he only went to 6500. So I have a very bright shift light that comes on at 5800 and a red one at 6300 and that helps.
I really like CherrySS suggestion to put a up stop on the throttle. I'm going to make a little clap or find a really small bar clap that will clamp on that tab on the throttle body. It shouldn't take much to whip up something I can easily snap on and off that will stay put on the track. What a great idea CherrySS!
Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate it.

You don't happen to autox in Neosho, MO do you? If so we met at an autox once.

That is preety interesting.
How easily can you switch between two modes?
Lets say you bring the car in for service, valet parking.
Can it be done on the fly if you have your laptop handy?

Dammit I can't remember (been a while since I had that conversation), I think its just a flip switch. I know you have to cut the car off. If you had a laptop handy you wouldn't need the PCM to store two tunes as you could just load a different one.
Call Frost if your interested.

User a handheld tuner to set the top speed or RPM's to some lower level.

rig something mechanical. that limits the throttle blade to only open a certain % of wot.
if was me. i would make a throttle bore restrictor plate behind the tb.
made from phenolic. kind of like the tb spacers.
but the bore only has 50%. even if the throttle is open 100%. it only sees half the airflow just enough area for the blade to swing and clear.
it should restrict the engine pretty good.
easy to install and make.
.5 or .75 piece of phenolic plastic sheet. or other stiff plastic sheet.
3in bore holesaw. but only to mark the bore outline. center the bore.then cut out the bore in a D or half moon shape.
drill with 5/16 or 3/8 drill bit for 3 bolt pattern.
some gasket paper. for tb to phenolic ( i have used roofing felt to make tb gaskets before and it works.)
(3).5 or .75 longer throttle body bolts.
should work good, easy to install and remove at the track.

Nope. I run in Omaha and Sioux Falls mostly. But the lying turd I bought the car from was from down your way in Popular Bluff MO. It's possible you may have seen car around.

that's cool man. i can understand giving respectful guys something like that. i just know some people that have asked to drive my car that would beat the crap out of it and not think anything of it. i never let them of course but some people just don't have any respect for other peoples stuff.
