View Full Version : Going to 410's - couple questions.. fluid, rebuilt kit, ect

This is my second time upgrading a 10 bolt, this time it's for my new 97 z28. The posi still works great so I'm putting in some new 410's and a master rebuild kit, just have a few questions. The first time I built a 10 bolt it was on my 93, went 373's, new Auburn pro posi and Royal purple fluid, master rebuild kit. No problems so far from what I can tell but I wouldn't be able to hear noise over my build anyway (383 huge cam).

Should I just stick with regular diff fluid and the 8oz GM LSD additive, or should I use the Royal Purple again? If I use the Royal purple, do you need to use the LSD fluid as well? Royal purple says no but I want to get a definite answer from someone who knows Camaro's and knows the answer for sure.

The rebuild kit - Should I spend an extra 40$ and get the wheel bearings with the kit? Car has 170k on it but all seems well.

Any tips or helpful info is greatly appreciated. Do I have everything covered?

I wouldn't waste money on the royal purple personally. However, if you do decide to go that route, read the bottle. If it says it has LSD additive in it, don't worry about adding any unless you notice the clutches not slipping around turns.

Sounds good. How bout the rebuild kit? Should I just pay extra for the wheel bearings (40$) while I'm in there?

Just to play it safe I would spend the extra 8$ bucks and add the additive .. That's my opinion, i use royal purple also and still add the additive .. I heard from some guys here they even put 2 bottles of additive, not saying that's right but that's what I heard.

Yeah Auburn actually recommends 2 bottles of the 8oz additive, but they stopped putting Auburns in F bodies in 98 right? Then they were Torsen?

Royal Purple is good stuff, but a little too pricey for my taste, especially when you have a bigger rear that holds more fluid. I did use the stuff in my old 10 bolt, and I've also used Lucas, and Valvoline. All good stuff, as long as it's not a generic store brand, you're pretty much good to go. Most new synthetics don't require the additive.

Right, if the oil used all ready has an additive for the clutches in it, there is no reason to add it. The only reason to add more additive is if the clutches aren't slipping properly around turns.

I agree with ethan.I had 373,s put in last week, my rear end guy says dont need it u nless your additive doesnt have it allready.

If your spending money for Royal Piss, you should get Amsoil instead. Royal Purple used to be good years ago, now they are almost no better then normal synthetic, they just are hype now compared to years ago when they used to be really good stuff. Then amsoil took over in that department. I would add a tube anyways, it doesn't hurt to add it and you know your sure if you needed it that you already added it.

Yeah I wouldn't pay extra for Royal purple, I'm getting it for free. I have friends in good places for car stuff hehe...

So if it's between regular fluid and RP, why wouldn't I use it ya know?

It's too late for the wheel bearings, I'm getting the gear install done tomorrow so no big deal, asked my guy and he said it's easy to put them in anyway if I want to in the future, just need to pull the cover drain the fluid pull some clips off and go.

I get my gears installed for 100 bucks. Last time he put in my new posi, gears, and rebuilt everything with the master install kit for 100 bucks, he does great work too. CAN'T WAIT! This car's gonna be a BEAST with full bolt-ons & 410's.. I love the M6 I will never own an auto sports car again.

In that case I would do the same haha. 4.10s in a m6 is one of the best mods I have had done!

Nice man, could you tell me a little about it? How big of a performance increase did you notice? Also how was your drivability and mpg, did it make a big difference around town and on the hwy in 6th gear?

I can only speak for car's I've done that have been auto trans.. I did the 373's in the Camaro, that was decent but not as great as I expected. I did 410's in a Mercury Marauder, that was nice but the car was so big any mod you did counted almost for nothing.

Auburns were an option after 98, well at least SLP offered a tightened Auburn in 02 with the SS, which is what I have. That said, I run amsoil for everything except the rear. Auburn explicitly says not to use synthetic. . .are you guys running synthetic and still getting good lock from an Auburn posi? I might try that now because mine is so tight that it is a little scary in even the slightest turns. . .it doesn't chatter and bind in parking lots etc though.

If you want to use the pipe method to drive the wheel bearing you need the carrier out. Otherwise you need to get a bearing puller and slide hammer. . .$60-$100 for both if you buy, or my pep boys rents. So what I'm saying is it will be no more than $100 more expensive to do it later, but with that mileage why gamble? Just do it.

I have RP synthetic in my 93 with a new Auburn Pro posi, 373's, and it works great. No noise, no problems, it's everything I could expect it to be.

Yep, I'm even considering 4.22s/4.33s for my 9". The 4.11s are still very street friendly.

Would any of u recommend 4:10s in an A4 cars stock Sept for cat back and what other things would I have to do to accommodate this upgrade

Catback only car? There is no reason to run 4.10s at all in that car. Get a stall, some headers, intake and all those goodies first.

^2 i loved my 3.73's in the auto any more and it would just turn to many rpms to take it any where. and i personally dont like RP products i feel like they disappear over time i used to use thier engine oil and id almost need a quart every oil change and i switched to mobil1 with no issues.

but as far as the diff goes i use cheap shit because i/we will blow the 10 bolt up long before we would have any issues regarding using the wrong fluid :P

Got the gears done, yup 100 bucks from my master mechanic retired buddy, he has a super nice house with a 2 story garage, 2 lifts, so jealous haha..

LOVE THE 410's LOVE THE 410s LOVE THE 410's

They are extremely street/hwy friendly still and I could've gone bigger really. Tires bust loose with ease now, car YANKS like a mofo. I can't believe how much power and how healthy this car is for being all stock. The gears made a huge difference. The SLP lid conversion made a even bigger difference, anyone with a LT1 don't even bother with a CAI dude LS1 lid is the only way to go. Car is a beast now and will only get better with the longtubes & exhaust going on.

Also at the last minute I went and picked up the axle/rear wheel bearings and boy am I glad I did. My driver side axle bearing was shot so the axle was rubbing, has a nice deep groove all round the axle when we pulled it out. Sanded it down and put the new bearings in and it's much better, but new axles are in my future. Everything went perfect with the gears and they don't make any noise.

This should be everyones FIRST MOD whether you are A4, M6, LT1 or LS1. Gears gears gears.

In response to the above post my 373's in my built A4 felt like nothing. You're saying your rpm's are way too high? It's a pretty small change, if I had to do it again I would have gone much bigger in the A4 and a little bigger in the M6. But I'm not the kind of guy who cares about "drivability" really, my 3600 stall drives just like stock to me.
