Carbureted LSX forum - carbed 402 questions

I am nearing the end of my 402 build but have some loose ends that need addressed, hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. I am running the gmpp distributor kit with a pro billet 302 distributor, but do I need to use a bronze drive gear? Also what spark plugs should I start with? I am running l92s with a 5cc dome at about 12.7 to 1 on 112 octane fuel. Where should I start my timing? I have been hearing these engines don't require as much timing as the old sbc engines, this if my first ls motor and I just want to be sure before we fire it for the first time. Thanks guys

I'll give you a bump but will also tell you very few people run the distributor set up.
You might try posting a new thread titled "What dist gear.." in the title. Might catch the eye of one of the few guys actually running one.
Either that or PM some of the sponsors who sell the dist kits. I think I have seen the PSI Conversions guy talk about their distributor kit.
As for timing check out the stickies titled oddly enough who is running a distributor. Lots of timing curves in there. For initial start up you can just use one of the pills, say pill #2.

Depending on the distributor, it might have a melonized gear, if so you won't have to run the bronze. I'm running a Autolite AR3934 with 13.5:1 on gas and seems to be fine. I've got my timing set at 32* locked and it really likes it, a little hard to start sometimes when it's hot. I'm running the MSD Ready-to-run billet piece with just a coil, no box. I like things simple.

I would switch over to a bronze gear, I have the MSD crank trigger distributor and it came with the bronze gear - Wear pattern on the gear looks good.
As for plugs.. I was running NGK 3346's on my 14:1 383. I ran it at 31* on motor and it seemed happy.
