I'm looking at buying a vortec 8.1 for a camaro build. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about these motors. Are they Ls based? Possible mods? How well they fit? Any necessary mods to make them fit? Etc?

Not ls based. They are 496 cube bastardized big blocks. They have cathedral port heads which there is no aftermarket for. They have metric bolt pattern for the heads which means you can't use older big block heads without extensive modifications...

However, if left stock, they make decent power and a ton of torque and I believe they use the same operating systems as ls engines and a lot of the sensors are the same.

Follow the guide in the small block/big block section to make it fit.

Wow a vortec 454 build be more worth the time?

If you go BBC steer clear of Vortek and go aftermarket. There are a ton of builders who use World blocks and the standard really is 540 cubes, not 454. Lots of crate motors available and many options available.

BBC looks to be a tight fit in a Gen IV and low cowl will limit intake options.

This bbc stuff will get real expensive, real fast, with a weight penalty to go with it. This is why people are going crazy over these ls engines. Budget friendly, light weight, serious power, aftermarket parts everywhere, interchangeability...I can go on and on.
