Paint & Body Work - The "Roxanne" Appearance Build Thread

Back in March I bought my first car, a 1994 Camaro Z28. The car had just under 123,000 miles and a "rebuilt engine" and bolt-ons. The car was in desperate need of paint and I had always wanted to "restore" a car. (I wouldn't call it a restoration but you get the point.) When I first bought it two rims were black and two were silver but the previous owner had another set of rims and tires that he gave to me in the sale but here's what it looked like the morning after I bought it.

http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w501/stevesfbody/day2.jpg
As you can see, its seen better days. So I decided to clean it up and saw the true extent of the blemishes. And on top of it, my kind neighbors decide to key the ever living shit out of it.
Heres a pic with the tires and rims mounted
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w501/stevesfbody/saladshooters.jpg
To give it a better look I bought some stainless steel inserts and Z28 emblems

A month went bye so I cleaned it up again and shot some pictures in my backyard.

Soon to come is a shaved berger panel, new exhaust, new rims/tires and probably a different hood. Oh and if anyone is trying to get rid of some rims PM me

hey steve
Are you planning on rattle can painting it or actual automotive paint through a spray gun? Btw if you plan on keeping the stock 16" wheels and want to check out something new look into Plasti-dip. Best part about it is that if you dont like the color you choose you can peel it off like skin with no damage to the original rim / surface.
Thing is coming along, maybe I'll see you at a meet sometime in MA

I will be using Dupont paint through a HVLP spray gun but I will probably respray my jams with a rattle can. And yeah probably around July I'll have it on the road so I will most likely see ya around

Hell yea man, Body work is all about experience. The great thing about doing it on your car is that you can re do it and re do it until its perfect! You can take the time to wet sand more using different grits than if you were in the shop working on someone else car where you step down quicker and really make that biaotch SMOOTH.
I would check out a shop that mixes paint and you can have them make you a shade that you like.
Rosso Corsa might be a good alternative. There is a place near me that can even make you whatever color you want in an aerosol can. But if you already have HVLP available to you it wouldn't be hard to spray the jams too.
The berger looks great too.
Are you going to paint the headlight surround red as well? I think that looks great on the LT cars. But sometimes the black looks good and since you have the berger mod you might leave it black.

I'm really trying to explore my options as far as red tints go and my car came with the berger it just needed inserts to make it looks good. I have another spare berger panel which I'm going to fill the letters with plastic and paint it to match the car in case i get bored of the flat black one I have now.
And I'm deffinatly painting the headlight buckets black for two reasons:
1.) in person it really doesn't look all that great to me
2.) also I'm trying to make it seem subtle, but noticeable to the trained eye.
I've been going to school for auto body for almost 3 years now and very rarely do I get excited about working on a car but this is deffinitaly exciting.
Tuesday and Wednesday I'll start working on my doors and get everything else set up for paint

ZR1 for the win! They make replicas that arent too expensive, if you cant find factory ZR's in good shape. I'm looking into a set of hurst rims myself for the future, but not sure where to find them... I saw them in a Keystone performance cataloge next to a set of ZR1 replicas:cool:

Ford has a red paint that I've seen on the new F150's. It is gorgeous in the sunlight. Almost looks like it has a bit of pink in it. Here's an example, but the pic doesn't really do the color justice. Go to your local Ford dealer and have a look:

When you see it in the sun it looks a mile deep. Be prepared for sticker shock when you see the price of red paint versus, say black paint, lol.

Any red color will cost a lot. Ask a painter how much it typically costs for red paint.

Yes it is more for red on certain colors of red generic red is the same as black color types. But generic red just looks cheap to me

I'm in the industry and understand the costs of red but having extra tintcoats like pearls or metallics is just going to increase the price of the already expensive paint.
On a sidenote I've narrowed down the paint choices to these:
Vibrant Red:

I'm not a fan of the volvo red I think its to "look at me" while looking kinda of cheapish if that makes sense.
I like the torch red, seen it in person on a Zr1 and knew that if I ever got a newer c6 vette I would want it torch red. To bad its exclusive to the Zr1 i think.
And yes a good red paint is going to cost more, but red usually lays really nicely. My best friend is a painter and he loves spraying anything red.

Because it wouldn't really stand out on a bright red color, and if it's going to be bright I want it really glossy but if it was a dark red or blue I would deffinitely go with the metallic.
My6speedZ
05-28-2012, 10:32 PM
If you go to someone that mixes their own paint, I doubt there will be much difference between regular, metallic, pearl.
Most of the premium you see with metallic paints is dealers thinking those words command a higher price tag on the option list when in reality there is not much difference.

A fine grit sand paper will smooth it out just fine; you don't really need to prime spots that dont have body work on them so I'm not going to waste time/material doing it. Also I'm staying away from the engine bay aside from a good cleaning and to be honest, I really wanted to keep it red from the start

Sanded down the hood, did some bodywork over a little spiderwebbing and primed:

Started working on my shaved berger:
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w501/stevesfbody/2012-06-20192623.jpg
Bodywork done on HUGE dent on the rocker:
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w501/stevesfbody/2012-06-20192636.jpg
Bumper removed and sanded: (spider webbing)
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w501/stevesfbody/2012-06-20192646.jpg
On top of that I installed an upper ball joint and tie rod end because they both shit the bed. On top of that I sanded down a little of my door jams, probably going to repaint them all minus the engine bay.
All's that left is to do a little more priming, give the car a bath, mask it and it will be ready for paint. Still going with Victory Red and am really anticipating how it will come out. I get out of school on Friday too so I will be spending probably everyday at the shop until its all finished :)
Thanks

It took me 6 months but after all said and done it looked like rhis he told me je liked street and rat rods so i did this and put a 400 firebird motor in it bored to 406 and made 470 rwhp. http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r599/JUSTINSWS6/52truck.jpg chopin the top really takes time and patience alot of it.

Hopefully I can finish painting the car by the end of this week but the color really is amazing, especially in person.

Nope but that's where I bought it. It had the nose repainted but the paint was chipping off.
Its funny because the kid that I bought the car off of, bought it right as my friend was gonna look at it but he ended up later with a 99 SS.
There's a lot of f-bodys over there though

I think its more of a preference thing for most people. It was my first time painting jambs and I just did it seperately.
It was tough doing the jambs getting in weird tricky spots with a spray gun so if I had to do it again I would certainly do it seperately. I also used an aerosol can for the clear coat too which made it easier; for me anyway.

Alright so I know its been awhile since I've made any progress but the person who is letting me use their shop to work on my car is my grandfather, who is 80 years old (but still kicks ass!) and he was diagnosed with Lyme disease so he was out of commission and I didn't want to rush him back into things but now he's back and I'm really starting to make some progress.
I jacked up the car, to help paint the rockers, and began prep work and masking and here's how it looked right before paint.

Sadly I don't but over the winter I plan on getting some new rims/tires and lowering it as well. The car sits to high and the 245s make it look bad but it'll have to do for the time being unless I can find a good deal. But I kind of want chrome C5DD 18x9.5 but we'll see how my taxes look :judge:

Don't worry, the hood sits nice and flush now but man I've never felt so accomplished in my life. I repainted the one silver wheel as well so now all of them are black. Allls thats left is to get a new battery, (because the one in it shit the bed from having all the doors open all the time) get a new passenger side window switch, (doesnt work and no clips to hold it in) and then clean the damn thing.
After the winter is over, I plan on getting C5DD and get some nice lowering springs and struts. But as of right now, I'm even happy with the salad shooters on but that probably won't last long :jest:
Thank you for all the people that have followed this thread, it really means a lot. I will hopefully get some nice high-res pictures in a few weeks but until then this is it.

Needless to say, that won't happen. I do like his car though. But as far as my car goes the only thing left I want to do is lower it, and get some new rims.
Thanks for the kind words
Is that a __Z__ joke?! Haha

I'm around Boston, Quincy and the South Shore basically everyday. Sometimes up in Attleboro to see a good friend. Not sure where abouts you hang, but I'm sure we'll cross paths at some point.
I usually go to the car show at gillette stadium everyother thursday. I never put my car in it, hardly bring it there. It might be over soon though, not sure. Theres a few 4th gens there usually, only talked to a couple.. they seemed cool

I was amazed by this thread. Excellent job. I wish I had the time to do this myself to my dd t/a as it is in decent shape, but I would like to restore it completely. I just would never have time or money between work and my $1200/mo car payment, house payment, wife tax, etc. lol
Still, great work!
