Default Gauge location. Fuel pressure across rails?

First off my question concerns a basic return style system with feed to one rail, with crossover, and regulator at the end of second rail. My question is, does it matter where the fuel pressure gauge is in the fuel system? Obviously I would assume not on the return side of the system, but as in before of after the rails. Will the fuel pressure be different before the rails as opposed to after the rails? Is there fuel pressure drop across the rails?
