So i have been looking into getting a CAI for my car i just bought a 02 z28 M6 and the only thing it has done to it is a catback i dont know what kind but it sounds ok on there for now. I have been browsing the boards and searching but all i can find is people changing just their lids. I was looking at getting the SLP Flowpac or Volant but from what most people are saying all i need to do is change the lid out? Just looking for suggestions because if ill get the same benefit as a full system from just changing the lid out id just rather do that so any input would be appreciated.

Get a lid and do the !fra free ram air mod.

450xguy, there are two main reasons you don't see just your typical long stainless pipe with a cone filter on it on the f-body. The first is the Mass Airflow Sensor. On the f-body, the MAF is connected to directly to the lid, so when air flows through the lid, it flows through the MAF and then through the Throttle Body. The MAF plays a big part in making corrections to the air/fuel ratio. If you remove the MAF, the car will still run, but will throw a check engine light and switch to a conservative factory version of a "speed density" set up where the MAF is not needed. This conservative failsafe GM version of speed density typically makes less power and nets less fuel economy.

The second reason is that the f-body is set up to route air from underneath the car straight to the mouth of the lid and into the engine. Most people believe that using just a regular cone filter in that location picks up a lot of extra hot air from the engine bay. By upgrading the lid, you remove all the extra factory garbage that creates restrictions but still take advantage of the way the vehicle was intended to get cooler fresh air.

When Dustin mentions the free ram air mod, he is referring to the mod found here (http://www.installuniversity.com/install_university/index.htm). Click on "install documents" and then "free ram air". The free ram air improves the ability of the car to flow more fresh, cool air through the lid.

Hope this helps and good luck.

the chris1313 unit looks like a nice piece and comes as an ac or non ac unit. theres also the ftra which is basically the same thing.

Yeah check out the chris1313 set-up if you want a little more then just a lid.

I'm not convinced it needs anything more than a better
seal between the core support and hood, and a little bit
of styrofoam carved out of the "nostrils" behind the
grille insert. That makes the whole nose pocket cold air
to be drawn from. Move the IAT out into it while you
are at it.

My SLP CAI hack draws from the pocket and I saw the
inlet air temps being about ambient (blended hood scoop
and pocket air) while as-delivered, the blended air temp
was 10-15 degrees above ambient.

I think im just going to stick with the lid. Now would you guys recommend just a lid or a full system like the slp flow pac? Or would i just be wasting my money on that and not really get anymore gains that having only an aftermarket lid would give me

Could someone expand on what the IAT acronym means?
