Default Programming the ECM

Im working on installing an 2002 5.3 in an 86 Chevrolet C10 I know I have to have the ECM reprogrammed, I was wondering is this something I have to send off and have done or something I can do at home with the proper software and cables?

Either one.

If you have the means to get a good tuning software (HP tuners, EFI live, etc...) and don't have a hole in your head do it yourself.

Kevin is correct, Either route will work. You can do it yourself with efilive or hp.
