New LS1 Owners - Newbie Tech - Am I getting the right cam?

I am installing a 5.7 LS1 from a 1998 Trans Am into a 1989 IROC Camaro. I planned on porting and polishing the stock heads and adding an LS6 intake. The camaro weighs about 3500lbs and has 3.73 gears. I plan on a 2500 stall converter. I also will use a cold air intake and Hedman mid length headers and a Magnaflow exhaust without cats. I called Comp Cam and gave them this info. I said I did not want the cam to pull hard until about 2000rpm to help with wheel spin. They recommended a custom grind with 228 duration, 580 lift, with a 113 LSA. It should pull hard 2000 - 6500 rpm. Would you agree that this cam would work for my application. I would like to get about 450rwhp.

you wont be getting 450 rwhp but that is a nice cam.

Thats a solid 365-380 RWHP cam all day. Maybe less or more depending on how much the converter slips. Look for LT headers, and consider some after market or prof. CNC ported. If your a DIY guy your results may vary.
You'd also be better off with a torque converter in the 32-3600rpm range.

Yea, does not need a 4,600 Circle D but just something a little looser. The engine will like it vs a TPi or LT1.

I agree, there is a ton left on the table with the mid lengths and stall. I would definitely get some lts and at least a 3200 stall.

Could be engine by and k-member clearence issues. Or that he got them already.

Yes, I would love to go with long tubes but I don't know how to get them to fit my '89 camaro because of clearance issues. I would much rather have them but can't find any to fit with LS1 motor. As far as the stall, I can go 3500 if you guys think that would be better. I just wanted it to still be something I could drive on the weekends around some. I want all the horse power I can get with what I can afford now. I will consider some good heads later. Thanks for the help.
you can buy hooker LT's they will fit i used them on my 86 with a 383 and a blower made 550 rwhp and then i added a 250 shot the headers worked great, you will need to have a custom built exhaust i had MTI build mine in houston before they closed down. good luck

Pretty sure hawks third gen sells a longtube header kit, sounds like a good setup but i agree i would go bigger on stall,i also would talk to pat g,tsp etc on the cam, i just think its better to hear some other options

definalty headers, 3000-3600 stall, and I agree with the 375-395 WHP range otherwise it all looks good. Good luck!
^^^I was going to suggest Hawks Third Gen, there headers are made by Stainless Works so I would expect both there quality and price to be fairly high. BRP Muscle Rods also sells long tubes that are made for them by Headman, there a little cheaper but there also only ceramic coated steal and not stainless.

I am definitely going to a 3500 stall, you guys convinced me of that. I saw the hedman headers but I didn't think I had the room for the flat collector. It looks so wide. I'm running an automatic and it just looks like between that and subframe connectors there wouldn't be room. What heads do you guys think I could get at a decent price that would flow better for me then my stock 806 heads if ported and polished? Remember I'm already getting more than I can really afford right now.

799 heads and take them to a local porter.
799 heads can be found for 150-250 dollars with rockers. Same thing as a 243 without the lighter valves, but same flow. Have a valve job done on them and call it good. From what I have seen 265-280cfm can be had with just a valve job. That will support the hp levels you're looking to make easily.

i did not read every post, but IM sure you have been told that that stall is worthless. go at least 3200-3800. i think 3600 is the sweet spot. the 228r from texas speed is a great cam, and uses the XER lobes. its 588/588. and unless your adding a turbo or forced induction down the road, go ahead and get a 112 so you can have some extra fun on the bottom end. the wide lsa tends to bleed of some tq.
Give PTC or Circle D a call. Both are highly reputable.

Thanks fbodyjunkie, I will be on the look out for those heads. Since I'm going to a 3500 stall and hopefully better heads, do you think I could go with a little more aggressive cam? I was looking at comp cam 232/234, ,.595/.598 with an LSA of 112. Says it's good for 2400-7200 rpm.
Also looked at a Lunati with 237/243, .600/.600 and a LSA of 113. Says 2600-7200 rpm.
Are they too aggressive for my setup? I don't want to have piston to valve clearance issues.
I plan on taking to car to the track but I like to cruise the local scene on the weekends also. :drive:

Well I found a complete set of 799 heads for $300. I'm headed to get them. One step in the right direction.
