Ok changed the oil in the camaro, penzoil plat. 10w30. Put in 5.5qt and used a mobile one filter. The only thing i did different was put oil in the filter...(wish i never did). The car sat overnight. Got up this morning, checked dipstick and oil was just at the top of the hash marks. Started it up hear alot of noise (sounded like air in the cooling system, obviously not.) Then it started pissing oil out from the filter i think, i just shut the car off. I couldnt get under the car and i couldnt mess with it because i was heading to work. What the hell did i do? Did the seal on the filter rupture or do i have bigger problems? Thanks in advance.

I did see the oil coming out from the filter area. I did tighten the plug and filter to spec so it was all tight. I hope it was the seal on the filter. This is going to drive me nuts all day.

I always fill the filter before installing it and have never had any problems maybe just try a new filter?

My friend had a similar problem but I was his.oil pressure sensor that had broken off snd was leaking the oil.

Did the rubber gasket come off the old filter? Sometimes it will stick and if you double up gaskets it wont seal.

Opsu, i didnt break it when installing the ls6 intake, and its been fine since i changed it out.
There might still be the old gasket from the old filter still on, i need to check on that. Would that still explain the sound?

i agree its most likely the old gasket from the old filter seem an oil change place blow 3 motors cause workers there left the old gasket on the block ane never checked you can acually see the oil trail till the car blew up lol anyways priming the filter is what you should do not saying fill it up just enough to prime the element and put alittle oil on the rubber gasket to help it from sticking to the block as for the sound idk but maybe it was the oil spraying or when it hit the exhaust

The noise was like when you get alot of air bubbles in you coolent. The gargleing (spelling?) Sound. If i didnt hear the sound i would have left it and went back inside to only find a seized up block...

05-31-2012, 05:54 AM
well trace down the leak first clean the area up then run it see if any leaks and then if noise still exists trace it down if possible have someone in the car that you can have them kill the car if you need to right away other than that i dont know what it is but thats what i would do

im really thinking about it and i think it was oil gragling out of the filter maybe some air as well being a new filter.

I am with this guy. I did this once, and only once, with my Explorer. changed the oil and filter, filled it up, started it up to check it and lone and behold... my four year old said "daddy, your truck is peeing". Damn it what a mess to clean up. hope you caught it before it spewed too much oil out.

I appreciate the wisdom/advice. I am hopeing a double gasket is all it is. I will update later, i get out of work at 2pm and wont be able to touch the car til 3pm ish.
As for loosing too much oil, i guess maybe a quart. It wasnt running long, 2 min-3min tops

Had nothing to do with putting oil on the filter before the change, that's what your suppose to do

Thats what i though, but as soon as i change something up something goes wrong lol.

Exact same thing happened to me OP.
It was the first oil change I did after buying the car. Whoever did it last time didn't run oil on the rubber gasket of the old oil filter to lube it and it got stuck there and I didn't realize it so we put the new one on on top of it and it didn't seat properly which ended up the same result as you. Shut the car off immediately, cleaned up, had to go out and spend another $30 and everything was fine.
It's fine to add oil to the new filter, pretty sure its recommended.

I will agree with double gaskets, i have never done it in my 7 years of being a mechanic but have seen it and usually is doesent turn out so swell. as mine is leaking and wet all around the filter, i have a oil filter adaptor housing leaking. couple things to check. i always prime filters no matter what, especially on diesel engines. never want a dry start. unless the filter is sideways lol
my pops always stressed to check the gasket on the old filter to see if its there.

If it is a double gasket i didnt do any damage right? Just lost some oil.....like i said it only ran for 2-3min tops.

2-3 min it kinda long...but I'd think you should be alright. I started mine and after 10-15 seconds seeing the oil pressure guage sit at 0 and hearing it spraying out I immediately turned the car off.
YOU NEED TO CHECK THE OLD FILTER AND SEE IF THE OLD SEAL IS STILL ON IT.I have seen it happen a bunch of times when someone is not paying attention, after 20 plus years turning a wrench.you most likely just double gasketed the filter ,will not seal no matter how much you try. good luck

Now i just hope i didnt bang any metal on metal with no lube......:thinker:

pulled the filter off, removed old gasket, re-installed oil filter. Filled back up with oil, kicked self in the ass and learned a lesson.

If you had lube in the motor you will be alright.

I'll admit it...I did it...ONCE. Guess what though?? You'll NEVER make that mistake again.

Hell one time I changed my oil, and forgot to put the plug back in. It was on a rack, and thankfully hadnt started it and had to raise it back up anyway so I caught it instantly.
Never did that again after losing 6qts lol

Definately sounds like a double gasket. Ive seen it several times. Pick up the old filter and see if the rubber o-ring gasket is on it or not.

+ 10000 I saved a guy from ruining his engine because he was just sitting in his truck after he turned it on and immediately spued out oil because of the double gasket. He was lucky I was across the bay and happened to be looking in his direction lol

I knew it was double gasket mistake...seen it a few times. It actually happened a little while ago at my work when the "FNG" double gasketed a 42 quart capacity cummins DOHC ISX engine (15 Liter)...ever seen about 8-10 gallons of oil on the ground? Lets just say its an amazing mess. haha

You should change your name to "Eagle Eye Buford". I'm just curious on how the hell you saw a oil leak across a bay?

I haven't done that yet, but I have taken a oil filter and it was double gasketed the entire 3000 miles and it didn't leak, man the guy that did it got so lucky. I also have a friend who did that and blew up a motor, he was buying a motor for the customer and installing it for free lol.

Yup, it was a $33 mistake. Could have been a $2000+ mistake. Hope alot of people are reminded of making sure the old gasket comes off. And i always lube up the gasket and threads on the new when i put it on, so i can stick even if you lube it up first. And i went about 3 months and 3k miles between the changes.

It usually is very obvious, it creates a "fountain" of oil and sprays everywhere usually.

Did this once on my Vette. Thank god i didn't do damage but after about 5 seconds of running i could hear the oil coming out and was like crap and new exactly what i did. Went down, pulled off the filter and extra seal and all was good :)

Lol don't feel too bad man. The first oil change i did on my 79 Trans Am ended in disastrous results all over my friends freshly paved drive way. What happened was my car had the 6.6 Oldsmobile 403, and the guy at the Autozone gave me the filter for the 6.6 Pontiac 400, and that did not work out well at all, so now i always double check the filter. Good luck and hopefully all is well.

we all screw up once in a while...ive forgot to re install the drain plug after a cam swap....just cleaned the shop and while putting in the last quart of oil in i checked the dipstick and once i seen nothing it dawned on me. i just started laughing at my self...5 and a half quarts of royal purple on the ground of a fresh cleand shop floor will make for a good lesson learner haha.

Why would I change it to that? :jest:
And because the bay I work at is only maybe 100 ft long and the front of his truck was jacked up facing me with the sun in back of the truck making a silhouette of a thick oil stream coming out from the bottom

I had a motorcraft filter pop off after starting a fresh sbf 347 in my fox. shut car down quick and cleaned up. I checked the filter and seems that they didnt cut the threading deep enough on the filter. Could have been an expensive fix b/c of a $3 crap filter.

I've just done the same thing. Got everything cleaned up and got new oil in. Seems to drive OK but I'm hearing a weird noise now. (It's a manual transmission).
Whenever i hit the gas I hear a noise and it gets faster the higher I let the RPMs go. If I drop it into neutral it goes away. I imagine some oil shot out into somewhere it shouldn't be, maybe it'll eventually burn off....
Any ideas????
