View Full Version : Fixed headlight conversion project

06-04-2012, 10:15 AM
Ive been wanting to do this for a long time now. The only available ones look like crap and cost a fortune. Right now I'm in the research and design phase. I found some decent looking and small enough HID housing's with halo's ( but they look to be cheaply made. I would like to get a spare set of headlights to send off so I can get the lid turned into a cad profile. I would like to sell these to the public eventually, so any input is appreciated.

im interested, but those halos are junk, and those are 4" diameter projectors. if you want real halo's for the project hit me up, and I can help you out.

I really dont want halo's, and yea like I said those look cheap. Looking for HID projectors really, something like this maybe: 52BFICS%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D320898560535%26ps%3D54

I dont know much about lights, always been in to engines and machining/fabricating things to make power and go faster. The 2.5" diameter will also allow for a more sleek look than the 4". What did you have in mind?

I also want to do an amber LED strip/city light at the front of the housing.

These look nice:

Found an old friend who can do the lens cover for a decent price. Just have to do an order of 30 up front. Going to make two or three prototype sets.

I'm subscribing. Can't wait to see what you come up with

06-05-2012, 03:18 PM
These look really good and have tons of options, even an amber halo which could nix the LED. I guess options could be had for each individual buyer. They have a D2S and H1...Im not sure which is better or preferred. They both have halo options, H4, but the D2S has many ballast options including a 55W version. Guess I need to read up on HID stuff tonight.

06-05-2012, 04:30 PM
there is no reason to do a 55 watt. i sell hid kits as well as custom halo setups (no not that preinstalled ebay crap)as a part time gig. all they do is produce more heat. they arent really any brighter, and dont light up the road anymore than a 35watt kit. i have run 55's and 35's

06-05-2012, 06:16 PM
From all the comparo pics I saw theres not much difference in the h1 and d2s projectors. Do you have anything like that morimoto D2S or H1 in an H4 kit form? Maybe we can help eachother out. PM me if you want

Im interested in this project....

06-06-2012, 10:59 PM
If it could look kinda like the c6 headlights and be paintable to match the color of the car if be down

06-07-2012, 07:20 AM
Yea my thoughts now are to do a few options, all of which can have the lens not attached so the owner can have them color matched to the car. Looking at making the inner cover out of carbon so they would be black if you chose not to paint them. Another thought was to just do a bare bones headlight and the buyer can purchase the projector separately and do whatever they like with it lighting wise.

And the creme de la creme will be one that does away with the dtrl/blinker and fog light, (the led strip will act as the running light/blinker) and a ram air intake will take their place. Thats a whole different project though, once this one is almost done.

Let us know the progress.

06-07-2012, 10:23 AM
Looking forward to seeing your progress. It's about time somebody that does good work tackles this!

I would like this option for my hawk even if it looked different than the planned SLP lights

I would like this option for my hawk even if it looked different than the planned SLP lights

I am not familiar with those at all. Got any pictures?

06-08-2012, 10:00 AM
Shoul have asked before but didn't think about it. What year span were you planning on building these for??? I just assumed 1998-2002

06-08-2012, 10:00 AM
They were originally planned for the 98 Firehawks- I think they only made one or two sets. There was a red one on the cover of high performance Pontiac in 97 that just looked scary. I saw them on display it the Tri Power nationals / Firehawk gathering a few years ago. I think they were going to cost too much to produce

Scroll down to #5.

These? Look goofy as well IMO. Better than breathless' by a little bit

picture that, with two round projectors sunk back further with the lens shape the same as the lid in the closed position. With a carbon shroud on the inside with some nice curves that flow from the outer profile to the round projector.

I plan on doing some drawing tonight to get the look nailed down. Ordered a set of D2S projectors since they have a lot more options for them. It was suggested by my source for lights/projectors to just sell the headlight housing and let the customer buy their own HID kit as some people might want to go the cheap $50 ebay route. I went with a denso 35w ballast. Im a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

06-08-2012, 10:26 AM
LOL, you beat me to it

06-08-2012, 10:29 AM
Im def interested. As long as you tell us where to get the same projectors and how to install everything lol. So it'd come more like a kit? Like here's the pieces so we can paint it, put our projectors in, and then seal it up?

06-08-2012, 10:33 AM
I think what killed the look of the red t/a is the rectangular lights in there. Makes it look like its got lazy eye. If it had 2 projectors each, an the insides painted to match the vehicle, it would look clean.

06-08-2012, 10:45 AM
^^ that's the reason I never liked the breathless ones either. We don't have a squared anything on these cars everything is curved lol. To have a light like that is a bad choice.

06-08-2012, 10:53 AM
Lol right!!

06-08-2012, 12:01 PM
At least we are all on the same page. The rectangle high beam is L7 all the way.

I chose the D2S housing as its the most readily available and the industry standard now from what I can tell. I'll give customers the option to buy the housing only, with projectors only, and I'll either do a buy in or get a big group buy for the first round for a complete kit. Essentially any D2S HID kit with an H4 harness will work, but not everyone will want to fork out

06-08-2012, 12:04 PM
Have you thought about your price point yet?

06-08-2012, 12:42 PM
Do you have any kock up pics???

I contacted SLP about the 98 hawk, those headlights were never put into production.

Here's some stuff I have done so far, theres a few tricks i learned while working on this over the years....always hopin somebody will come up with something better...while it is cheaper to do, the time gets eaten up with adjusting and fiberglassing, and seeing if it looks good, I have settled for functional over looks for right now...but definitely have at it. I really do wanna see some new ideas.

06-22-2012, 10:39 PM
Yea I got my projectors and HID's, but got covered up trying to get parts out before vacation. When I get back though its on!!

I am very interested. I have been thinking for the past couple months on how to make them myself. Here is my idea so far, I want to take the inside plastic or mounting piece of the c5 conversion kit, with 2 round holes for projectors and mount my projectors to it and then form a sheet of acrylic as the plastic cover using my current headlight cover. My issue at this moment is what am I going to mount the projectors too? I would love to be able to make a plastic piece to hold and mount the projectors too, I just don't know how. I've thought of making it out of fiberglass at first and taking the mold and having it reproduced but I don't know if I can make a good mold.

07-11-2012, 08:25 PM
Have you drawn put your design yet bro? I've seen many photo shoped stuff not yet sure what to design myself

Chris Hardy
07-12-2012, 05:44 AM
No I'm not very good at drawing but I want it to be like the C5 conversion kits. I'd like to be able to make the inside clear lid paint able. So that you can paint it to match your car color. Also I thought about putting a turn signal in it as well, not sure about that. I have to take out my lights and flip the gear for the driver side this weekend so I'm going to get my base made. I'd like to make a bolt on piece, make a template and take it to some local plastic manufacturers and see about making those, then form the projectors mounts to the bottom form.

07-12-2012, 10:19 AM
Yea its all drawn, pulled out stock stuff and sort of fabbed up a mount plate. My lens guy has bailed on me it seems so I'll probably make the first set off the stock lid while designing the molds for the lens and I'll make them myself too.

Looking at tommygunz photoshop last night and was thinking about doing them with no lens and a duct in the middle of the car to ram air to the intake...

Things are progressing slowly right now as I have another vacation next week, lots of work, and 3 cars that need constant fixing and tinkering

09-08-2012, 09:45 AM
Any update?

09-08-2012, 07:50 PM
Only that my tow truck windowed the block, camaro blew the 80, bird killed the clutch, new tow truck needed a rear end rebuild, and had to hire a lawyer. Been a crazy month. The 80 should go back in the maro next weekend then I can get back on this

09-09-2012, 12:07 AM
Holy crap. Lol. I'm sorry to hear that. Hope everything works out for you.

11-09-2012, 04:22 PM
Finally get to get back on this project! Should be all mounted by next weekend

11-21-2012, 10:06 PM
Are they staggered? Or even with eachother. It's hard to tell

They look very unique, not bad at all

06-03-2014, 03:30 PM
Any update on this? Finished project?? I am finally starting mine that I have wanted to do for ever, just trying to get ideas before I go through with it.

06-03-2014, 05:18 PM
Didnt seem like a lot of interest once I started piecing them together so I was just going to do it on my own time once the car was done. FWIW, I buy all my stuff from TRS, mine are morimoto mini H1's. The problem is there just isn't a lot of room from lens to core support. The spot I placed them with that bracket was for design purposes to see how much room was there and how a small round projector would look. The back of the housing is very close to the core support.

Reviving old thread.... was this finished? What was the end result?
