View Full Version : DOD LIFTER BUCKET ADVICE please

hi guys i'm going to do a cam swap for a mate on the week end
he has a DOD 6LT L77 ?
HE has new none DOD Vally plate ,ls7 lifters ,cam push rods springs etc ,and head gaskets
what i need to know is
do we need to change the lifter BUCKETS ??
are the DOD ones the same part #
as the none DOD ones
is there any thing we have to block off regarding the DOD ?
Ive done a few none DOD swaps
the car is only new with about 10,000 km on the clock

You need new ls2/Ls3 lifter trays for the DOD delete. Also it's a good idea to plug the holes like I did. Contact AES they came with my motor and I used red locktite. Just put them flush like in the pic. Good luck mate

Just did my block, a (letter) "R" drill bit, tap, and eight 1/8" NPT allen head pipe plugs.

do you have to tap out the posts to put the plugs in or are they all ready threaded from the factory ?

seeing how the engine is still all together ill just rely on the o'rings in the Vally plate as i don't wont to get metal shavings in oil gallery's

If you don't plug them or use the o-rings like the factory, you'll have 8 pretty good sized oil leaks...

little off topic, what is the difference between LS1 lifters and LS7 lifters, seems GM sells nowadays only LS7 lifters for replacement??

how are they made that is different, the axle bearing or ?

the buckets are quite a bit different w/ 1 1/2 being normal and 1/2 w/ springs wedged in them.
i'm doing a DOD delete as well, for the guys that tapped the holes in the valley, how did you keep the shavings out of the motor or was this all prior to taking to the machine shop?

Also, why couldn't the factory plate just be left in place, surely if fails closed, right?

i choose to use the valley plate w/ the o rings but am not 100% committed to that.

Excluding cam and cam gear.
1 x 12570471 Valley Cover
4 x 12595365 Lifter trays
4 x 12551163 Tray bolts
2 x 17800568 Head bolts
1 x 12499225 Lifters
2 x 12610046 Head Gaskets
1 x 12594779 PCV hose
1 x 12579145 PCV plug

With the new LS2/LS3 style valley plate you get a better PCV system than just the orifice in L76/L77 rear left valve cover. Use rubber plug on the old PCV outlet on valve cover. Use the hose to connect the new valley plate front right PCV outlet to front right side of intake manifold. Ditch the long formed plastic PCV foul air tube that L77 had running from back left to front right.

Here's why AFM has different lifter buckets to non-AFM.
See the keyed slots for AFM lifters which are keyed on one side.

Normal (non-AFM) lifter have flats on both sides.
AFM lifters have one side flat and one side keyed.

Normal LS lifter trays would have all 4 positions with 2 flats, like the 2 on the left here.
