I thought I needed a new rear. It seems that last night my rack pushed back into the cover. I thought the rear exploded but it looks fine. It has a few scratches around the ring. Has anyone ever seen this? Do you guys think I can just put on a new cover. Weird thing is I was able to drive 4-5 miles home with no oil. 357504

I'd say inspect it, hose it out with brake cleaner, slap a cover on it and let it eat. Absolute worst case you get stuck on the road and need a rebuild, you won't be out any more than a tow...but you will probably hear it start to go if It's bad.

Any idea on how the whole rack can move backward?

What are you talking about "rack"??? You lost a bolt in your posi and it spit around and the ring gear smashed it through the cover (from the inside). Pieces of it may or may not be still floating in the rear. This is a very common problem with the torsen posis.

Damn, I thought he was saying he had a bike rack or something...didn't see that cover pick blew from inside on my phone. Yeah, you've got problems man. Time to fresher it up or replace.

Don't know wtf I was saying rack for. So. I need to look for a broken bolt. The problem is I just don't see it

Look on the side of the posi, you may need to spin it around to see the one hole that's missing a bolt. Search around, lots of other threads pertaining to this also. Its one of the most common failures.

in the 1st pic,the broken head of the bolt is laying there at the bottom in plain sight.
the rest of the bolt,I assume, is still in the unit.

Now I really feel stupid. I don't know why rears freak me out. This would never happen on the front end of car.

Just took another look. The bolt head is actually in the picture. Laying at the bottom. There Is hole on the inner ring of bolts that seem to connect the ring. Actually it appears that the ring is connected by the outer bolts and these may be the bracket. Anyone know the size? I'm wondering if I can just screw a new bolt back in without disassembling the rear.
