Damn nice video but why don't they run them !!! Would be good to do a mile run with both head to head

With equal drivers I think we already know the results. How could 100 hp less carrying 300 pounds more compete!

In the mile the DC would be a factor but from looking I don't think they are much different.

Whats the shelby supposed to put out at the crank? 650? If so thats a little under rated I'd say, its more like 700 at the crank.

No surprise there. The gt500 would whomp the zl1 on the drag strip.

If you ratio weight/cu. in. then both cars come in virtually equal. Not sure if I have the weights correct but what I found was the ZL1 base weight at 4120#, the GT500 3850#. Add 175# driver brings the weights up to 4295 and 4025, respectively. ZL1 @ 6.2 then the GT500 is right on at 5.8.

From reading some of the info about the intercooler and blowers of each it appears that the ZL1 is limited in both as compared to the GT500. Not proven but with too small intercooler at boost too much heat is produced perhaps resulting in more advance being pulled. Perhaps reason for ZL1 low mph in some tests. And the blower is smaller than the GT500, less boost. In conclusion assuming same boost and intercooler cooling capability the ZL1 may actually 1/4 mile slightly better. With a taller first gear the GT500 certainly should not 60' as well assuming good traction for both. My guess would be the ZL1 definitely better on the circle track.

GM might want to consider some changes for 2014.

Check out this months motortrend, they took the 2012 zl1 vs the 2013 gt500 and put them through the ringer in three different settings, street/daily driving both on city streets and winding canyon roads, then they took them to the 1/4 mile and finally mazda autox course at laguna seca. The zl1 topped the gt500 in both the daily drivability test and the autox course and of course the gt500 won the drag race but heres the full article

You sure about the Laguna Seca results? Without the editorial.
The result: Shelby, 1:38.69; ZL1, 1:39.18.

That car should never once be compared to a mustang or camaro, same goes for a vette. the mustang and camaro are both 4 seater pony cars. The viper and vette are not..

Yes i aam suure about the laguna seca resullts, yes if it was a hot lap competition the gt500 wouldve won but read the article, the gt500 only made that lap time once and was never able to repeat it whereas the zl1 had consistent lap times over and over again, the driver of the gt500 explainedd why this was happening as well, the brakes of the gt500 became less and less effective as the laps were made, meaning he had to brake earlier going into turns as the trial progressed, thus slowing his times down more and more as it went, so IMO what good is a 660+ horsepower car if you cant stop it? So look at it from two points of the view and you'll have a diifferent winner, look at it as a hot lap and the gt500 wins, look at it as a circuit race with multiple laps and the car (zl1) with almost the same lap time every time is going to win, but if you cant rely on your brakes then speed is worthless if it cant be used safely. So IMO the zl1 still takes it if not based on the fastest lap then based on the consistency and reliability of the car that the gt500 lacked. Just my view

just the other weekend at Atco Raceway here in NJ they had a gt500 vs zl1. The zl1 went 12.94 i believe and the gt500 went mid 11's. There's a video on youtube somewhere. It was supposed to be a stock to stock comparison of the two, but the gt500 had the new MT drag radials where the zl1 was showroom stock...not so fair in my opinion. Plus the guy in the zl1 didn't look like he could drive either (m6).

I saw the Atco video online and yea the guy with the ZL1 couldnt drive and didnt heat the tires up properly at all, but i didnt know the mustang had DRs so thats totally not fair, also you cant compare the two because Ford sends that car to Shelby Performance and they do a ton of more work than compared to a ford dealer or GM dealer, the ZL1 is from the GM factory, how about we try again and this time the ZL1 comes from Lingenfelter Performance?

+1 on that.

multiple witnesses reported seeing the dr's on the gt500 plus that guy was a pretty darn good driver.

ZL1 driver was stock on street tires, and it probably wouldnt hurt him to take some driving lessons lol.
