I come to you with something a little different

I want to use this thread to outline the rebuild of my 1981 Chevy Caprice. I am open to any and all suggestions and input as the build progresses. There is nothing set in stone with this build. I am pretty willing to try anything as long as it fits into the budget.
-----------------------------
This car has been in my family since it was almost brand new. My grandfather purchased it from a neighbor at his Ft Lauterdale Florida condo. He brought the car to his home here in MA and only drove it on Sunday to church and for quick trips around town. Back then it had a 229 Chevy v6 and a th350c lock-up transmission.

I purchased the car in 2007 with only 42,000 miles on the clock....and had my way with it lol.

I built a mild 350/th350 combo with a small shot of nitrous. The car weighed in at 4040 with me behind the wheel, and ran a best time of 12.3 @ 114mph. The car was loud, big and a blast to drive on the street. I drove it daily in the summer for over a year...

Going on 2 years ago now, I sold the car to a good friend as a rolling chassis. I really am not sure why I did it. I kicked my self in the ass a lot afterwards for not holding onto it. Long story short, I now have it back and it is getting some lsx love.

My goal with the car for this year is to complete all the chassis fabrication. I want to drop the body on the frame, do a full 10-12 point to recieve an 8.50 cert and I am shooting for a race weight of 3600lbs (a lot of weight to remove).

I have a 2011 aluminum 5.3 short block I plan on using for this build. I am going to get away from the nitrous this time around and go power adder, but I want to see how far I can get on a budget. I really want to get the car rolling bottom of the nines and hit that 150mph slot....(wouldnt it be cool to see a land yacht with a chute?!)

Keep posted guys. I should have an outlined game plan and some more pics very soony. Would love some input.

Made some progress today with getting the short block disassembled and inspected.

The short block was a 2011 LC9...so it had the VVT and DOD (both of which will obviously be removed). Someone had dropped a bolt down the intake and it smacked up a couple pistons. I got the motor disassembled and it looks great inside. Not one bore/ sleeve was damaged. Rods and mains looked awesome. 2 pistons were cracked, but the stock stuff is going out the window anyways.

nice to see a box caprice not donked out. my parents had 2 of those in the late 80s. an 84 caprice classic diesel 4 door and an 84 caprice classic estate "woody" wagon.

ironically, my dad gave the car away in 1991 after it blew a headgasket. a few years later we got a call from some guy asking if we used to own a brown 1984 caprice diesel. apparently he was buying the car from the landlord where the guy my dad gave the car to lived because the guy skipped out on rent and left the car. he never retitled it so it was still in my dads name. he was calling because they didn't have keys for it. my mom had found a set of GM keys a few days before that and they didn't fit the car we had at that time (either the 84 wagon, or a cavalier we got after my sister wrecked the wagon) anyway, she said he could come get them and see if they fit that car. he did, and he called a few days later to confirm that they were for that car

This block is actually the new truck motor, basically the new L33. (not the FWD aluminum 5.3 you are thinking of. That would be the LS4. That motor does have a shorter crank, small patteren bell housing and completely different accessory drive).

I wont have much for front accessories anyways. Front and mid motor plate, 1 wire alternator, electric or remote mount water pump...and MAYBE power steering (probably not though).....thats the plan at least.

Funny story, quite ironic. Weird how things work out sometimes.

The car is back at my house now and I am making some progress. The previous owner did a bunch of crap I am trying to correct (tinted the tails, installed a half ass clutch pedal, and cut a hole in the side of my transmission tunnel)

I had originally planned on just concentrating on the chassis and etc this year, but those plans have changed. I am trying like hell to make a local event on September 8th this year...so needless to say I have a lot of work to do.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-3.jpg

My bare block is sitting at the mahcine shop right now, and I am honestly in no rush to get it done at the moment....so instead I am going to run my L33 that I had for another project. I figure I will get it running in this chassis this year, make some passes and have some fun until it brakes...then I can step up to a forged unit next season (assuming my funds permit). Anyways, this is the motor I am working with:

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-3-4.jpg
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-4-3.jpg

The engine is a 2006 L33 (Aluminum 5.3 with 799 casting heads). Since I am going carbureted, I fabricated an aluminum valley cover to delete the knock sensors. Other then that, the motor is stock as a rock. I just cleaned everything up, changed all the hardware and some gaskets and made it look real nice.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-2-4.jpg

The Plan is to spray this motor with as much as it takes (and can handle) to get as close to a 10.9x as possible.

I ordered my front motor plate today (ships monday). I picked up some steel sheet, but I have to make a template to build my mid plate.

I decided for tires I want to run the Mickey Thompson 315/60r15 ET Streets. I picked up a set, and was pleasently surprised that with a little rolling on the fender lip, they will fit really nice in the stock tub. I used to run a 295/65, so I knew the height was there...but man does that tire fill up the tub nice. The 30" height should also help on the street with the new gears and the 3spd.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-1.jpg

After I had the tires all fit, I decided to start in on the body mounts. I knew my chassis was clean....but I have NEVER seen a gm rail as clean as mine with the mounts removed. Theres not a spec of rust on the key-ways and the oem paint is still there!

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-10.jpg
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-2-2.jpg

Not one body mount bolt broke! They all came out like butter.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-4-1.jpg

The mid plate is going to be tied into the firewall and the front frame rails, so since I needed to make sure that the car as a whole was nice and stiff. I lowered the body down onto the frame as far as I could without any major clearance issues and took some measurements. I determined that half of the oem bushing height was where I needed to be (roughly 3/4" lower then stock). to tuck the frame inside the rocker box. Since I needed a really good template to go off, I took my new Energy Suspension bushings to my machinist and asked him to duplicate them in a half height set out of 6061 aluminum. So in other words, I am lowering the body and solid mounting it.

The photo's do give it a blueish hue...but it is actually universal grey. Just an engine paint I picked up at car quest.

Got the body mounts back today...they came out AWESOME!

The machining on them was spot on, and they fit like an absolute glove. Now I need to square the body and torque them down. Once thats all set, I can find the centerline and get the motor mocked up. Race day is coming up quick so I have a lot to do if I plan on making some shake down runs...

The body is completely squared and torqued down on the frame. Huge pain in the but. Lots and lots of measuring....but it came out great and thats all that matters.

The big news is that the motor plates are almost done!

Mike at Robinson's Race Cars does some pretty amazing work and I have nothing but good things to say. For those not familliar with him, here is the Car-Craft article on his personal ride: http://www.carcraft.com/featuredvehicles/ccrp_1108_1971_ford_maverick/viewall.html .

We have been working on the Caprice for the past few days, and I am wicked happy with the motor placement. If you look carefully at the top shot photo, you will notice the balancer is nearly perpendicular to the tie rod end of the spindles (meaning a lot of the weight is past the front tire and off the nose) Moving the motor back and down opened a ton of room. There are also a pair of saddles that are welded to the front of the cross-member which will essentially index the motor whenever it comes in and out.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p195/bfurches/Caprice%20Reborn/temporary-5-7.jpg

Once I get the accessories mounted on the motor, then I will take the front plate back off and trim/ radius it along with the saddles. Still have to fab the limiters and etc, but the hard part is done.

It has been a little while....but here is where I am at.

Motor and transmission are in the car. Both the front and mid plate have been trim down and final fit. Fabricated both limiters. The front frame rails have been stripped and painted flat back. The complete front suspension was rebuilt with all new Energy Suspension and Delco parts. Control arms were sand blasted and painted. Ride height was dropped. It's getting there.

Made quite a bit of progress...but unfortunately I won't make the race I was planning on for Saturday. Regardless...I believe I can get this thing moving under it's own power come Sunday.

I installed a Wilwood prop valve and bent up all the stainless hard lines from scratch. I found a prop valve bracket on a Cadillac at the junk yard I modified for the Wilwood piece. Barry from Custom Racing Hose came by and made the front braided lines to the calipers. It came out really nice.

The MSD had enough length in the harness that I was able to run it into the car and mount it in the passenger side foot well. I made an aluminum kick panel and painted it with wrinkle black, then top-coated it with the blue SEM die that matches my interior (so it looks like the textured stock plastic stuff). I also top mounted and hid a distribution strip for neater wiring to the relay center on the back of my hvac delete.

In the nitrous department...I finished designing and wiring my three stage timing ramp based system. Overall it came out really nice in my opinion:

The exhaust is stainless 2.5" into dual bullets on the same side. It came out awesome and follows the whole "wtf" theme of the rest of the car.

Thanks guys.

The car came together very nicely for the time frame I was working withing. Unfortunately I was unable to make it to the rain-date at the track. I am still having some tuning issues, but I am looking forward to chipping away over the winter and getting this thing out on the strip.

I had it on the street a few times, it felt pretty good.

It has been a long time since I updated this...

I had a rough winter and didn't get to spend a whole lot of time on the car. I also ran into a bunch of tuning issues early on in the year with the carb setup. I believe it was a combination of the intake and carb being too big for the application.

Anyways....long story short, I decided to try my hand at fuel injection. I pulled everything off a 01 Yukon at the salvage yard and built myself a harness and etc. It came out AWESOME! I love it so much....my electric water pump acts as my t-stat through the fan 1 output....regular fans are on number 2. Wideband is in, and I am learning quick.

what, gears and trans are you running? or did I miss that? and this is a pretty sweet setup. It is making me think twice on getting a 5.3

Nice build. Love the swap. I saw the car at Marks, monday night cruise night. Super clean and a ton of custom touches. When do you plan on spraying it?
