Default Battle with newer WRX Sti

After watching the Heat/Celtics game tonight I was heading home and stumbled upon what I thought was a newer teenie bopper Toyota Scion.

The person was driving aggressively with the weaving in out of traffic routine.
So traffic clears up a few lights and I roll up on this car and i see the little sparkly Subaru Emblem which looks nothing like the Scion logo.

The dude was looking over smiling revving his engine anticipating me as i rolled up on his left. He nods his head and smiled anticipating a race. I wanted no part initially and ignored him. I take off slowly and he paces me for like 10 seconds or so.

I say to hell with it and drop it down to second at like 40mph. Then he punches it and i follow. We were neck and neck briefly and the top of third i had a car on him and it stayed that way up to about 120.

I heard loud high pressure noise the whole time.
I dont street race much... Can you actually hear someone spraying that loud??? Lol i was like wtf.

Anyhow we did one more run from 30 mph-120 with me holding him off by 1 car the entire time and not pulling any more on him. I thought i shouldve pulled more but his car would was on my rear bumper on both runs for most of both races.

My car> 02' WS6 m6: dynoed 390 rwhp/365 lb ft after the headers and the retune.

Are the new Subbies that stout or was he spraying is what I'm trying to figure out.

Do you street race a lot of nitrous cars? If so can you hear when someone is spraying?

I just did a little google investigation and the model i ran was a 2011 with a 305 hp turbo engine. So he must have been spraying i would think.

Are you sure you weren't hearing his turbo spooling? If it was modded at all I'd imagine the STI guys do turbo related stuff not put spray on top of boost like the Cobra people do. Either way nice kill.

have you ever heard a turbocharger? I doubt it was spraying. If it was that close it probably wasn't a stock turbo though. Good kill.

It was the turbo. You can hear them pretty well at WOT.

I'm guessing you were talking about a 2010ish WRX STI? I don't think they've released a 4th gen STI yet.
At 390, you should have walked him if he was near stock.

I'm sure that V was putting about 370+ down

It must have been the turbo then. That wouldnt make any sense to spray before making the turbo system more efficient/powerful.

Well he hung in there pretty good, must have had some aftermarket stuff done to be that bold/confident.

Did it sound like this?

If so it's an external wastegate on his turbo.

Or was it something like this?

If it's that then it was most likely just a blow off valve (BOV)

It sounded just like the first video, so it was the wastegate then. Im not too familiar with turbo cars, normally all i hear is their blow of valve (BOV).

P.S: that was some of the slowest shifting i've ever seen in that first video.

Funny you mention this...just ran a new-ish STI over the weekend on the highway, and he pulled a good 2-3 cars on me, and I'm stock. After talking with him, he was putting down ~360 to the wheels with an upgraded turbo. Little suckers can be quick.

A friend of mine has a couple year old WRX sti that is all stock. We ran 2 times at the track and he did 13.3-13.4 @ 100mph with 1.7x 60' times. With all wheel drive they really launch, that guy you raced didn't do himself any favors with the rolling punch.
I'm thinking to one you ran into wasn't stock or you would've put some more cars on him.

ext wastegate does not mean that its a not a stock turbo.

you can buy an up pipe for STI's with an external gate on them. and with intake, headers, down pipe, up pipe, exhaust, cobb AP, with meth and a protune, youll be at 340-360whp with these cars. Just intake, downpipe and exhaust with a cobb stage 2 AP they put down 300whp on the dot almost. Which is good enough for a mid 12 pass in these STIs.

but i put bus lengths on an STI with 300whp lol... without the headers/upipe external gate they nose over like a bastard, and cant pull worth **** over 140kmh
