well im supposed to be taking my 01 camaro to my friends shop to have him look at my column since its loose, incase worst comes to worst, are all 98-02 fbody colums the same? or are camaro and firebirds diff or are v6 diff from v8? or are there diff by the year?

I think in 2000 they added the radio controls so that makes the wiring different from the 98-99. Mechanically I think they are all the same.

Well...if the two bolts get loose over time....the column will drop down more and more. It will move back upward if lifted upward. But it will also move side to side as those bolts get loose.

anyways, basically its not that simple since its loose from where the tilt is at, everything below the tilt it tight.

Thats cool...I'd have to see it. I've just had a few friends over the years complain of their steering columns bouncing up and down while driving.....it was just those two bolts. 4 minute fix.
You seem to have something else going on.....

A column is pretty cheap on Ebay. Changing them out is simple as long as youhave the correct wiring, ie: radio controls or not.

I told you what to do about it. Change your steering column. Use the Search Button and find your answer, That is what I did when I needed an answer. All of the information is here. Get off your ass and look for it!!!!

IMO its definately easier to replace the column than try to disect it to tighten the bolts that make the wheel loose. I had the same problem, After replacing mine, I pulled the old one apart to try to figure out waht was wrong with it...I'd say on a scale of 1-10...replacing is a 2 and disecting is a 5 or 6...There is alot of small parts and springs besides needing a steering wheel puller.

What did you find when you took it apart?? Is it just loose screws causing the problem?

Replacing the colum is easier, but chances are the new one wil do the same after a while. All gm columns get loose over time. Its best to fix the original if you can. It sucks to do because there are a lot of small parts and that makes for tedious work. If you dig down in there deep enough, you wil find four bolts that hold the knuckle for the tilt. Take them out one at a time and shoot loctite on them, then torque them back down. Remember only remove one bolt at
a time, if you take them all out its a pain in the ass to put out back together.

it wasent just the loose bolts, it was the housing assembly, it was all fucked up.... a member on here ls1z28 (a retired GM mechanic for 38 years) fixed my column and a bunch of other shit for my car today and man does my car feel a lot better, the column feels like a brand new car ;)

I just talked to an old friend who has been rebuilding columns since the 70s he said TO HIM its easy bring it to him give him an hour and 60 bux and he'll loctite the bolts. He may do others I'll check with him when he does mine.

My problem was where the housing pivots. the holes were rounded out and worn where the pivots were through it. The only repair was to get a new aluminum housing.

Can you post the part number of that aluminum housing if you have it? I actually replaced by column because it was worn and the used one is worn also. I want to order that part and do it myself this time.
