Every time I close the door the spring falls off......is there a clip that holds the spring in place? Here is what it looks like

That looks like the spring that is on the back of the window regulator

I just recently put my window spring in my driver side door. The easiest way to get the spring on there is to put a wedge between the glass and door to keep the window from dropping. Once you have that finished, remove all hardware from the door and take the mechanism out. Once it's out, take off the motor and mark where the arms line up with each other (so when everything is put back in the car, it isn't backwards). To put the tension on the spring, place the spring center on the slitted stud where the arms meet. Use the other arm to load the spring. It's easier to hook the spring with the arm than to wind the spring by hand. If you oil it up, it works even better. Once you have the spring under tension, you'll have to put the motor back on to keep it from unwinding. Put the entire setup back in the door and you should be able to finish this in about a half hour. I did it this morning and it works great. Another point to make is checking the gear connection with the arms. There's a stud that keeps everything connected. If that connection fails, the mechanism falls apart. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. The spring fell off after I put the new motor in. The window goes up and down fine without the spring in place.

I put in the spring without removing anything too. Its hard to explain how I did it but ill try. First you need to grab outer end with vicegrips. From there go ahead and install the spring onto the middle part of the regulator. You want to install it so that it will go about 180 degrees before it catches on the lip of the regulator. I did it with the window about half way down. As your turning it once you get to the lip part of the regulator your going to half to kind of turn it to make it around the lip to lock it in. I used a long screwdriver to help it make it over the lip. Ill try and take some pics if I can.
