What is the best way to verify what's wrong 98 ls1 suddenly developed loud tick/knock I've done pulled valve cover rockers looked good push rods were good about to drain oil and check for metal shavings

What should e my next step if there's nothing in oil or oil filter
It sounds like it's coming from driver side do I need to pull head and check lifters

My next step would be to pull the heads and camshaft to check the valvetrain. If you have no luck there you will have to pull the shortblock out. Were you hearing a knock or a tick?

Should I have this motor rebuilt or would it be cheaper to buy a assembled short block

I would really depend on what went wrong in the bottom end, like if the shavings are from the main bearings, rod bearings, or both? Either way, it will probably require machine work of some sort at this point, whether it be rotating assembly or the block (assuming damage is not too extreme). Feel free to call us if you have any questions, we will be happy to help discuss the options you do have, and which ones would be best for you.
