I got and illegal tint ticket once and just paid the fine. I do not know if that will work for the smog gods though. Interested if that will work, posted the result if you try that route.

How do u know its a ref ticket, what does the ticket say, is it correctible and did they refer you to a ref.

If he got a ticket for illegal exhaust, more than likely it's a ref ticket. I know some people just pay the ticket. One person on this board got pulled a ticket for the same thing. He just paid the fine. It was around $500; however, I have heard just paying the fine doesn't clear the ticket. The next time you get pulled over for the same violation, it could be worse. In fact your car will probably be impounded.
If you do put it back to wear it would pass the REF smog, then your ticket will be $250-300.

does it have the ref sticker on the back of the ticket? the driver should have applied a sticker to the the back fro the ref to sign.
I thought they didnt have refs anymore because of the budget cuts?

I should have said that illegal exhaust in regards to emissions, e.g., no cats, longtubes then here in Cali it will be more than likely a REF ticket. If just for being too loud, then it's just a fix it ticket.

No sticker was placed on the back. Just says modified exhaust correctable "yes" and modified/altered smog device (long tube headers) "NO"

I might just have to put stock manifolds back and cats. Make it quiet and take it over

That's weird. Since it says modified/altered smog device, I thought for sure the LEO would have put a sticker on the back that states you have to take it to a REF. Did the cop say anything about a REF?

If they don't smog it no. But I asked what had to be done. He said its correctable and has to be taken to the ref.

Better put the stock exhaust back on and go to the ref. Nothing else you can do really.

Doesnt matter what the cop said, it's just like a tint ticket bro just more intense. You don't always have to listen to a cop to get things done accordingly.

Call up the court and see what they say. I got a ticket a little while back for "being too loud" and a front plate fix it ticket but the cop put a ref sticker on the back..long story short I kept delaying it and was going to fight it but called the court, they said the dumbass cop put the exhaust as NON correctable so I had to pay that fine..got the front plate signed off and $250 later I was out of the ticket with nothing done to my car..

Thanks for the help guys. What I want to know is why is the header a non correctable. I really think it should.

Depending on which penal code was written, it can be corrected but by a certain officer.

If it says you have to see a REF, you'll probably need to go in.
If it says correctable, you can get its signed-off.
Here's a list that may help you

If the ticket has 27156(b) then you probably need to see the ref. That's what my ticket had but the cop also put a sticker on the back stating I do need to take it a ref.

i though there were no ref stations open to take it to because of budget cuts.
when i got mine 5 years ago the officer put a special white sticker for the bar person to sign

Been thru this recently got LTs and twin 15 lb bottles of go juice that is visible and technically illegal on my truck. Cops made a big ole stink over it at time of getting cited threatening to tow truck blah blah. I paid few hundred dollars in fines over the court Internet site never even had to go near court house or ref.

Unless they passed a law while I was gone for 3 yrs... NOS isn't illegal to have.
Only to use on public roads.
Glad Ryne posted about his experience on just paying it.
You guys are probably used to it, but while out of state I bought a 3rd gen. I got the major evil eye from every cop I passed in that car. I drove my 4x4 the same as the TA and got completely ignored. -I'm not young and don't have a lot of hair so no profile there to match either. I started driving the GTA more like my age just to stop getting pulled over..... I had to sell it so I wouldn't lose my license.
