View Full Version : ARP rod bolts & resizing the rods.

I ordered some ARP rod bolts & I thought I could just use them in place of the stock ones & resizing wasn't necessary because the LS uses "cracked type rods" Does anyone know for sure if it's necessary? To be honest, I'm not even sure what resizing is, or what it takes to do it.

To resize a cracked cap rod, you hone the big end over .002 and use a special bearing. The bearing part number is clevite 1776p IIRC. I checked my 2008 LY6 rods after installing the bolts and they were a little out of round, so we had them resized. At the very least I would install the bolts and have a machine shop check the big end. Hope this helps, Eric L

Depends who you ask, some say the 8740 arp replacement is direct drop in, others say measure, and some say resize. Personally i just installed them and the motor has seen multiple track passes shifting at 7200rpm all day.

Some work out, others don't. Katech swears theirs are for direct swap, arp does not.

Vengeance and Thunder Racing say straight swap on the 8740's. But like I posted earlier.......... Just another opinion.

Do you always rebalance the rotating assembly after adding aftermarket rod bolts?

i cant find that part # on Atech.(summit) .. is that the steel type and the bolt kit is 134-6006?

also they dont carry katech.. i havent checked jegs yet

Yes, 134-6006. I have plenty in stock; we always check them in our machine shop. Sometimes they drop in and other times they need sizing, my personal opinion is Kaltech or ARP or any other brand, always check no matter what the manufacturer claims.

7 of 8 of my stock rods were fine. One was borderline, so I just ran it. after a few (50+) runs when it came apart that bearing was shiny in a few spots but never showed anything past the babbit

Many are budget building and want the quick swap for cheap insurance. I say spin that bastard up with the stock bolts, lol. Replace if you have it apart and check size. Spin my stockers to 7200, no complaints.

Thanks to all that responded. I ended up getting the ARP pro series rod bolts p/n 234-6301 And gave them to the machine shop to resize them. Not sure if it really needed them, but it gives me a little piece of mind! I read that the pro sreies had 220,000 lbs of tensil strength & the stock replacement (134-6006) have 190,000 lbs, not sure if that makes any differnce for my application, but they were only a few bucks more.

You would break a rod or piston way before the 190k pieces.

Hey Cartel, I'm not sure yet, I dropped the pistons & rods off at the machine shop on Fri & left town til Wed. He said that even if he had to resize all of them it would be a max of 2 hrs labor. plus the bearings. I'll let you know exactly what it cost me when I pick them up Wed night.

Yeah man, picked everything up last week, he resized all of them for $80.00, then had to buy different bearings that were .002 larger on the the outside. it was well worth a little extra $$ for me, just for the peace of mind.

the rod bolts arent really the weak link anyway...the rods are. if your going that far toss the stockers and get even a half decent aftermarket rod.

i have all the stock shit in mine and spin it 7100. so far so good.

7200 here, but if i yank a set of rods, bet your ass ARP is going in and resizing. Just refuse to reuse stock rod bolts.
