View Full Version : Transamcoupe98's C5Z Build

Building another C5Z (2004 Mill. Yellow) and going a slightly different direction with this one. My previous C5Z was an AFR 205 head and custom cam with full bolt-ons. Made gobs of power under the curve. Sold it a couple years ago to a guy for a freakin steal. Here is a pic of my old 2001 C5Z.

Now time for the new one. Here it is the day I bought it with 12k on the odometer. Bone stock down to paper air filter.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/2004Z062.jpg

I have progressively bought everything I need to make one nasty full weight, air conditioned, street car for fairly cheap. First thing I did was got rid of the C5Z wheels and bought some gloss black C6Z wheels with 18'' Nitto 555R drag radials.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/Image3.jpg

Then decided to black out the lower rear fascia, like the "CETA" mod...and I also added some LED Halo taillights.

With all of this extra power Im going to be making, I need a clutch that will support it. I talked with Doug at ECS and hooked me up with a Mantic Er2, capable of holding whatever I need to throw at it. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/Image2.jpg

Im big on color coordinating, and the theme for this car was going to be yellow with black accents. With that said, the calipers were red stock, so I had them professionally done with Mill. Yellow paint code.http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/Image6.jpghttp://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/Image7.jpghttp://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/Image8.jpg

Also, Body side molding or (BSMs) have been taken off, they are hideous. Along with that, car has been lowered all the down using longer aftermarket lowering bolts (Approximately 1.75'').

Had to get this thing breathing a little better so I took off the stock Titanium cat back exhaust and replaced it with Borla Stingers. Had them on my last Z06 and love the note while cruising and WOT.http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii319/transamcoupe98/Image6-1.jpg

I got with Thompson Motorsports and spec'd a cam that would make great power everywhere in my power band and ideal for my compression ratio. The grinder is Howard's cams, sort of old school brand but have heard good things about their proprietary lobes. This was actually the hardest part for me in this entire build. Cam and valve train geometry is so important, I wanted to make use everything was spot on and squeeze every little cunt hair worth of power out of it on motor. Also added a Comp rocker Trunion upgrade. Cheap insurance...

Old red C5Z VS another buddies ported/pulled 03 Cobra... Cobra made roughly 515Rwhp IIRC. I was in the Z recording, no passengers in the Cobra (did have two rims/tires from the drag strip earlier that night however).
Z short shifted the last gear a few hundred RPMs... The Cobra was around 7200RPMs IIRC trying to not shift.

No, I am going to stay cam only for the foreseeable future. Ill need to get a built rotating assembly before I can throw more power at it. Possibly a 441 down the road. What do you have in mind for yours?

Im working through a couple 427 options in my head right now. The cheaper/quicker one being a forged iron block stroker from AES with Tony Mamo working over my heads and a 102/102, which should be good for over 500 rwhp/tq. And with that option that would leave me room to safely spray a 100-150 shot. Or going ahead and shooting for the eventual goal of having ERL resleeve my block, and have a more size appropriate topend, which would leave me PLENTY of room for improvement. It just depends on how soon I want to get this finished, which I am sure once I get going will be like yesterday lol

Either way my goal for the T/A is a pissed off NA build. I have some other ideas in mind down the road for some FI builds :secret2:

Well my lifters have started to make a little more noise than I am comfortable with so the heads are coming off. While they are off, Kris Nelson and Matt from Clearwater, FL will be porting them for me for a great price. Along with this I ordered LS7 lifters, ARP head bolts, and GM MLS head gaskets with .51 thickness.

I beleive there was a reason why I didnt get the race style but cant remember. If anything, Ill just use some blockoff plates for the EGR. Man, the welds are perfect, a quality piece. I had LG's before, and I think the quality of Kooks is better as far as the welds and how clean/perfect they are. And these are 1 7/8'' primaries with a 3X3 X-pipe.

It depends on the brand honestly. Usually there isnt a HUGE power difference but there is a significant difference in the quality of the welds, steel, bends, etc. I have working knowledge about every header made for a C5 so I have some good info if you need it.

Reason I asked is the EGR fittings are bad about breaking off at the welds. My Kooks did it on both sides.

When he goes to a forged bottom he is going to switch to 1 7/8s and an Xpipe dumped.

The bit nicer brands also usually have a merge spike... It might only be good for 1-2 HP but anything helps.

Makes perfect sense... The valves in the L92s are very large so it hurts the low-mid range a tad. It is there one down fall compared to a cathedral port setup.
However for the money I saved and the power I will make, that was fine by me.
A stalled auto won't notice it hardly as much as a 6 speed car.

Yea the cam is going to have quite a bit of overlap and will work quite well. Im hoping to get 440 wheel on motor with the ported 243's. Car is def gonna have a nasty lope.

Yes, and a stock ls6 intake.. His last one with the AFR 205s, slightly smaller cam and stock intake made 450Rwhp.

With nice heads, a FAST intake, and a nice size cam you can hit 475Rwhp in a six speed pretty easily.

Ok, I see I need to start reading more. What can we do with an LQ4 Lem? Its in my truck and I don't want to lose low end (ala L92) Would similar ported 799's yield similar results with Caleb's cam? Or is the L92 the end all for budget builds?

You have a lot of options... The Lq4 already suffers from low compression so I would try to stay with a cathedral port top end (ls1/6 style heads), it would make for a sluggish build IMO, you would be hurting in the low-mid range pretty badly.

799s would equal close to the same results as Caleb is expecting... Again though, the compression will hurt you a tad. It isn't anything to cry over though.

I would consider flycutting... Why? You can mill your heads even more to help raise the compression while still running a good size cam. That along with a decent port job would make it a nice setup.

But yes... The L92 top end is extremely hard to beat when looking at $/performance.

Just starting reading your build thread Lem, looks good thus far.
I have steel heads so just changing out those should free up a bit weight off the nose. I know you are not a turbo guy and if the L92's weren't so cheap, I would be tempted to go with 317's and a single T76 turbo.

If it's not too late, why not have Phil tune it? Knowing what I know now about tuning(substantially more than when I first started tuning my car), I'd only let Phil touch it. Just my $.02 though

Jeremy has tuned my last 4 cars. He's a friend and I'd feel bad. Jeremy is a good tuner and so is Phil. He's been by the shop checking out the car so he knows its done and he usually gives me a decent discount. HOWEVER, is I dont feel comfortable with the tune afterwards since Im running nitrous, Ill have Phil check it out for sure!

200 jets are installed and bottle filled. Will have pics and vids up soon. Traction is going to be a slight problem since Im running radials and not a full slick but hoping I can keep the 60' around a 1.7. Should make a mid-low 10 sec pass with 134 mph trap is my expectation. I swear by Borla Stingers. Had them on my last z06 and it was a no brainer on this one. Lot's people love the GHL Bullets, but the Borlas are not that bad for drone and they do have the best WOT note. The GHLs have that good crack too it at idle but it makes it sound like a "muscle car", rather than a more exotic sound that the Borla gives. Ditch the Ti's for 350 bucks and you can find used Borla system often. I would LOVE to do the TPE flares, but dont know how much it would cost for the parts, fabrication, paint, etc. I would imagine 2k or so.
