General LSX Automobile Discussion - steel ws6 hood from gm???

well I am looking at picking up another trans am, the guy says he put a new steel hood on it from gm because the other one got damaged. did gm even make a steel ws6 hood? i didnt think you could get one aftermarket or gm that was steel, maybe he just dosent know its fiberglass?

There is no "steel" WS6 hood from GM. Actually, I think I've read that GM has discontinued the WS6 hood at this point, so used or aftermarket is the only option now if this is in fact the case.

Now, what he might have meant is that he put a new steel GM base model hood on the car because the stock WS6 hood got damaged. The base Firebird/Trans Am hood was steel.

thats exactly my thoughts, but the picture is the ram air hood and he said it was the most expensive gm hood, i think he things its steel and its really fiberglass

Pretty sure the factory GM WS6 hood was not steel, it was some kind of composite material. These is an acronym for it but I don't remember off hand. It has been discontinued although I have seen them new from a website. I think they took the mold and then started re-making it. Not a sponsor so I can't post a to it.


VFN makes fiberglass ones that are a lot cheaper though

sheet moulding composite is what came from gm. Im betting its fiberglass though.

Sheet Moulded Compound or Sheet Moulding Composite = a polyester reinforced material & is also a process, from what my ole ladies dad tells me & hes been a bodyman for about 50yrs If anyone made a steel certified GM hood it would be Goodmark Thats the only company that GM recognizes per say Atleast thats how it was lol Shit changes every day IVE Never seen a Steel Ram Air hood or SS hood & I used to work at GenCorp that made the tops for Fbodies & vettes They also made other stuff but I worked in the Fbody & vette dept

I work at the plant that makes all the c6 body parts and it's all smc. Exact same material used to make all semi truck hoods.
