General Maintenance & Repairs - unable to pull any codes

I jump a to b turn the key to on position the check engine light goes off and nothing else, no 12 code flashes no codes at all, my car is backfiring very bad could a faulty pcm be the cause.

Loooootta things could be the cause. Cant just condemn a PCM, it should be diagnosed.
