I had the opportunity to fly out to Midland, TX last month to shoot at the Chaparral Cars HQ and the Chaparral Gallery of the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. The Chevy powered Chaparral Cars pioneered the use of ground effects in race cars beginning in the 60s. Everyone there was so nice and accommodating, which made the experience fantastic. These are all the original cars and the Chaparral 2D and 2E were rolled outside which doesn't happen too often. Despite their age, these cars are still incredibly sexy.

Chaparral really were pioneers in the whole understanding and manipulation of downforce. Lots of rules were written thanks to the work they did and innovations they put into practice including active downforce in the force of fans creating a negative pressure under the car.

It's a shame they got 'outlawed' so quickly.

These are cars that were developed back in the 50s and 60s when there weren't wind tunnel tests. The had active ground effects which made them pull well over 1g in turns which was unheard of back then.

It's a historical thing.
