So, I've got a Polk PA880 (and a Polk PA660). Both good amps, they work great for my purpose. The bad thing is, the PA880 overheats after 10 minutes if it is really hot outside. It goes in and out of protection mode (I'm assuming) and really makes the music unbearable (bass on, bass off, bass on, bass off). I really like the looks of the amps, and the amps themselves, so I'm wondering if there would be a way to cool them. I know I could move them out of "direct sunlight", but they look good there and the amp has cooling problems anyways. The PA660 doesn't overheat at all.

Any possible solutions? For reference,

A good old 12v mini cooling fan will work wonders.

First!
What size power cable, 8awg, 4awg?
How high is the gain turn up?
What ohm load is the amp seeing from the sub/s, .5, 1, 2, 4?

Any or all of these could be the cause, or a contributing factor for the overheating.

mine is in the middle of the hatch and if it sits in the sun with it hot all day it will shut off. i just roll the window down and get some air flow back there or ac on cool the inside of the car turn the radio off then on and it works fine... i actually had the top of the other day stuck in traffic which sucked!!!! and my amp kept cutting off till we started moving

4 gauge to a splitter - 8 gauge to each amp.
Gain is set to maximum allowed before clipping.
Running at 2ohms.

As stated, amp is notorious for heat issues anyways. There is literally almost no place for cooling on it. I've read about putting a fan on there, but I do not want to make it look out of place. I'd have to build some kind of stand or something.

Yeah, if you could space the amp up just enough to give it even 1/8" of space under it one of these fans would should eliminate the overheating issue. You could also have one blowing across the top for similar results.
Take a look at the Stinger crossflow fans #SGJ78 (8.125 inches long) or #SGJ76 (5.75 inches long). You can get either one for about $31.
I've been using the Stinger crossflow fans for about 10yrs; they work great!

I would get a piece of oak plywood ( or a similar hard wood) paint it black and mount you amps to it (spaced ~1/8" off the plywood)and mount one of these fans between your two amps..
FYI, you will hear a little bit of fan noise at low sound levels with the fan mount out in the open.

My exhaust is relatively loud and so is my music most of the time, so hopefully the noise won't be noticeable. I will try that suggestion. What I might do is cut two 1/2" or so strips of wood the length of both amps, screw those into the carpet, then mount the amps on top so they aren't sitting directly on the carpet. Then get the fan and mount it (maybe in between depending on how this works) or in front of the sub amp.

I think a laptop pad with cooling fans would work well too. http://ak1.ostkcdn.com/images/products/P10337918.jpg

I don't think the body of a laptop cooling station would survive very long inside a car, and most of the the fans in them don't move enough air.

Put some darker tint on your rear hatch too.

Computer fans under the amps. They run 12v and you can get them with neon and such if you wish.

I've started on the process. This is what I have so far, but can't find a damn drill for some reason. Basically, I'm going to lift them up in the front and rear, probably put a fan in the middle. I'll paint the wood black and clean it up when I get it finished then decide which fan I need. My hatch is tinted darker than legal already.

^ That actually may not be that bad of an idea, just to get it off the carpet.

I had a Cadence amp back in the day when they were the first to come out with fan cooling. Worked pretty good since I had a Kenwood amp that would constantly over heat.
