Carbureted LSX forum - Can't get outta the hole... Carb help needed

Thunder v2.0
07-05-2012, 01:30 PM
The setup:

LS1
243 heads
MS3 cam (.610/.603) 237/242
Vic Jr intake
HPI 850 E85 carb
Th350 w/3600rpm stall. 3.73 rear

The problem:

The car has a lean stumble at low mid rpm (2000-3000ish). This presents an issue when I launch off a footbrake. It will begin to stumble as I raise RPM and then as I launch it just lacks the "oomph". Wideband reads high AFR (16+) before it'll get with the program after the 60ft (11.5afr). Makes for rather lackluster launches. The problem also presents itself when I goose it from a roll, particularly worse with more load (1st gear not bad, 2nd gear worse, 3rd gear can be pointless) it will peg the wideband lean and stumble terribly before it will smooth itself out. Other than that, car runs fine, can sometimes be kinda hard to start. Put down 400whp and 325wtq on a Mustang dyno

Sorry for the lack of carb details, but its an 850 Holley DP that's been modified to flow around 930cfm.

What does timing look like? I don't know jack about alcohol, so I don't have much to input from there.

28 degrees flat across the board after 2000rpm

Maybe try ramping it up from 20 initial. That will help with any hard start, and of you are running e85, surely bump timing up to at least 32-34.

Smaller idle air bleeds should fatten that part of the transition circuits up.

Eric from HPI actually built the carb for me, its practically new. I'll shoot him an email. I wonder where I can get some air bleeds in a pinch lol

I'm sure you'll get it straightened out pretty quick.

your converter is AT LEAST 1000-1200rpm too small for that cam. That is a large part of it being lazy out of the gate. I'm running a smaller cam and my 3600 is a dog out of the hole. But went with 50cc primary pump shot and 40/40 squirters f/r and that took care of the issue.
