this is not the limit.

it uses stock boss 302 heads, stock Boss cams, and american racing headers.

with larger valves, bigger cams, more is availble.

PRESS RELEASE:

With a brand new generation of Mustangs looming on the horizon, you would think Ford would start pulling back when it comes to the power and performance of the outgoing Mustangs. But you’d be wrong. Take the 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet, which clicks off a 0-60 mph of 2.57 seconds and can run the quarter-mile in the high 8-second range at over 150 mph. That’s going to be a hard act to follow.

At the heart of the Cobra Jet’s success is a 5.0 liter V8 that comes in naturally aspirated and supercharged flavors. Ford Racing recently took one of the naturally aspirated models and strapped it to an engine dyno. If you’ve ever wanted to hear this engine in its most raw and primal form, here’s your chance.

Tested on Ford Racing’s 17G dyno, you would think we’d get dyno numbers to go along with this video. Alas, that is not the case, as the dyno numbers are not yet being released (most likely due to the highly-competitive nature of this vehicle). However, we can infer from previous passes at the drag strip that the naturally aspirated Cobra Jet 5.0 is making in the range of 600 or 700 horsepower at the crank.

The video itself is rather revealing as well. For a full 30 seconds, the 5.0 liter Cobra Jet engine revs higher and higher. Eventually the headers even begin to glow red from all the spent horsepower exiting through its pipes. The sight is at once inspiring, awesome, and a little scary. We wouldn’t want to run up against any Cobra Jet-powered car at the drag strip. That’s just an embarrassment waiting to happen.

something to keep an eye on

the 5.0 the 5.4 the 5.8 are absolutly mean out of the gate

Where did you get that info? Gaining almost 300hp with just compression and bolt ons seems a little high doesn't it? Either way it's a sweet motor just think there's more to it.

"When we calibrate the Cobra Jet, we sweep it at every 500-rpm increment all the way up to 8,000," Rob added. "We sweep the exhaust cam and find the optimum spot, and we sweep the intake cam to find the optimum spot. Sweep the spark timing and optimize that, then sweep the fuel and optimize that."

i went to the frpp site and read the design in last month's 5.0 magazine.

whats more to it is everything else is modded. the areas for further improvement are heads, cam, headers.

the intake manifold is designed to make 750hp on a cobra jet 5.0.

bore increased from 92.2 to 94mm with sleeves
frpp cobra jet intake manifold
oval flat blade gt500 throttle body, custom maf/cai
american racing headers specific length header extensions
low drag components
12.5:1 compression and racing fuel

the stock boss makes 444hp. 200-256hp increase from frpp design.

They will never tell everything. they say boss cams, but who knows for sure.

620hp package is available already.

that manifold WILL find its way onto my coyote with a flat blade throtle body. then cams.

That's helps to know that and I'm sure it's a f'ing beast but your problably right we won't know the truth until it finds it's way into a private buyers hands. Now for the big question can you still call it a 5.0 or is it now a 5.1/5.2?

14% bump in compression, race fuel and an additional .15 liters will do wonders for power ;)

for reference the stroke is roughly .1" longer than a 350 chevy.

cost was a consideration in every aspect.

for example, porting the heads from stock 190cc to 200-210cc's and 240* @ .050 duration and 13mm lift cams would do wonders for 9100rpm power. using exotic I-beams would go even further.

they limited it to 8100. of course it loses NO torque from a stock Boss302. going to 9100 would lose gobs of torque even with variable cams.

It's gotta have a hidden supercharger or nitrous system. Ford needs supercharger to make big power.

Stock castings.

Yes but when people say "stock" that means everything stock not just the castings.

The scary is that this is the only the beginning. This is engine is using mild of the self parts. 10,000+ rpms are soon to come.

^^^^ Very true but remember a lot of today's "stock" parts are better then alot of "race" parts just a few years ago which is great for us but not so much for the after market suppliers because there having to work harder and harder every year to make power over the stock parts.:drive:

It is VERY hard to outperform l99/l76/ls3 pocket ported heads in the aftermarket. simple pocket porting CAN yield 330-365 cfm. of course the bad part of those heads is the massive ports really dont like less than 6 liters.

This new engine is .... outstanding. About 2 weeks ago, people were still saying there's no way a 5L would break 550hp N/A... Today that line may as well change to 800hp. It's a serious engine, to say the very least.

I wasn't trying to say you can't gain just that today's factory parts are great performing pieces unlike parts from the past.

I feel the 5.0 could make more then 550 n/a and still be street worthy but this motor has crossed over to full race which is a different argument altogether. But you are right it's a nasty motor in stock form and modding it only makes it better.

larger valves to me isnt stock heads.

the reason chevey had the upper hand back in the 70s and 80s and even to some extent today is they fun large valve engines however the game has changed no longer does chevy have the corner on large valve heads and large ported intakes Ford has stepped up to the plate they dont need a 427 to make big HP wait until this technology gets to the 5.4 and 5.8 then you will see some unbelievable numbers 1000hp plus Naturally asperated , then people like me can supercharge and well who knows
