New LS1 Owners - Newbie Tech - A Few LS1 Questions

I just picked up an LS1 today.
I confirmed it is a 5.7 and not a 5.3. It has 241 heads. The motor is basically a disassembled long block.
Is there any way to identify what it came out of, or what year the block is? The seller said 99 Corvette. I don't care if they are all the same.
The pistons and rods are dirty.
The cam isn't out, and neither are the lifters, there appears to be a little wear on them, but nothing too bad.
The cylinder walls look like they would clean up great with a hone.
The crank has some wear too, but every journal we checked seemed to be within service spec.
What should I expect cost wise in a rebuild, Rings, Bearings.... etc. I think I have quite a number of the seals for it. Also what will I have in an intake, fbody oil pan, wiring, computer, coils, and accessories?
Would it be worth putting a cam in this? From what I understand you need new springs, and all I would want is something with a little rougher idle, and a little better performance, but completely streetable with a T56.

Not a bad price. I would throw a simple 224 cam in there while it is out, get your heads cleaned up locally, and deck the head for a little added bump in compression, and you will have a nice set up.
You can throw in all new bearings, hone, all new gaskets, timing chain, etc.. it will add up quickly and probably have close to a grand if not more putting it back together. Look up the sponsor texas speed for prices or call the machine shop you will have it honed.
as for intake- look for a guy going to a FAST intake that has a ls6 intake- you can pick them up for 250-300 if you look around enough.

thats pretty decent, i've seen bare blocks that needed cleaning for couple hundred more then that before.
far as machining/rebuild expect between $1,000-$1,600 for a fresh short block

I was just going to mic everything, and then replace all bearings, seals, piston rings, and hone with a drill and put back together.

I would do...
New ls7 lifters
Ls2 lifter trays
Ls2 timing chain
Ls6 oil pump
Hardened push rods
Good single valve springs
Texas speed 228R cam
GM MLS head gaskets
Rod bearing
Main bearings
Rod bolts
Check cam bearing
Polish crank
Complete engine gasket, seal, and bolt kit
Make sure to check the bore sizes, a good hone might require you to to bump up to a 3.903-3.905 piston. Also I would have a machine shop mill the heads, check the guides, and run a vacuum test on them.

Good find, why can I never get deals like this?
+1 for the 228R cam. Also I don't beleive the 241 heads started until 2000 model years, but I may be mistaken. I know for a fact 99 F bodies had 853 heads.

This is correct, the 2000 WS6 in my sig had 241 heads. They started up in late 2000 model year.

I should have stated I think this motor has internals and heads from another motor. It Came with 2 cams... 1 with a Y stamped on it, and another factory one. If I go with a 228r cam, will it kill gas mileage? A little change doesn't matter, but I still want decent mileage.

228 shouldn't hurt your mileage that much at all. What kind of vehicle is it going in?

The 228R is a great cam if you want some more power and to retain driveability/mileage. And that's awesome, love 2nd gens! Got any pics of your ride?

:funny:
I don't really have any of it when it was put together... it's in pieces now, big project. Thanks, I definitely want driveability.

I would say its a good deal. You will get a chance at building up a good engine for your requirements.
good luck,

this seems like it's gunna be a hell of a car. I have been telling my stepdad he needs to do this with his 81 Camaro but is to old school for efi even though they have carb mani's... Idk. He is 41 but is as stubbern as a 80 year old.
Good luck with the build and doing it on a high school budget, we were all there at one point

Haha he would get good gas mileage!
Thanks! Amazing how your buying habits change when you stop working when school started. Almost time to find a job during school.
