Cam question for 228R / T2 owners
I have been planning to get a T2 cam this fall but I am not sure if its exactly what I want. I do not want to lose any torque down low. Would the 228R be a better choice for me? Would both sound pretty nasty with my exhaust setup?
My only mods are
Pacesetter long tube headers
Tsp off road y pipe
Slp lm1
Ls6 intake
Slp lid

My Torquer V.2 is a 112lsa/110icl I don't feel like swapping it now for such minor differences but if I could go back and do it again I would have done a 228/232 111lsa on a 109.

Running TEA LS6 heads. If they ever come off they'll be replaced with AFRs. The cams I seen specced for Mamo's car and some of TEA's builds all contained four degree splits. The downsize on the intake duration and ICL changes would promote more bottom end performance but at the same time I believe the similar overlap would help keep the sound I like and also keep a similar top end charge. Maybe not past peak but i usually shift my car around 6600 with the rev limiter set to 6800.
I'm no cam expert but I do believe I'd gain alot more under 5k and doubt I'd feel much if any difference above it.
Both Damian of Spartan Performance and Ed Curtis of Flowtech Induction use this cam. Both of them use a more agressive intake lobe than exhaust. The duration is larger on the exhaust but the ramp rate isn't and the intake lobe contains more lift. This will make the camshaft a reverse split pattern or single pattern in the lower lifts which I've read seem to favor applications where the heads flow more than the intake manifolds. Seems to me this situation would apply to any ls6/fast intake user.

With the 4.10's the gas mileage would be significantly cut. Pairing that with the cam would mean that i would have even worse mpg.
The more I look at the trade offs.. i might get the 228r because I dont want a pig downlow. And the peak hp tradeoff isnt worth the sacrifice of torque.

T2 loses some snap down low definately. I've seen mixed reviews on the 228s losing a little or remaining the same but either way if it loses a little it doesn't seem to bother anyone I've heard review it. I'd lean towards the 380 number just to be comfortable with the outcome but that sounds on par with what I've seen

i have a 00 T/A m6 with 228r, stock 241 heads, typhoon 96mm intake, full exhaust, and strange S60 with 4.10s i put down 406hp 376tq i love the 228r have i buddies with cams in the 240 duration's and i still beat them even top end wise i think the 228r on a 112 or 111 is the way to go

Either cam isnt a bad choice.Im happy with my 228r..I think its a great all round cam.Im much lower compression being an stock lq4 so I dont make as much power compared to an ls1 with the same cam.But 228r with your mods with a good tune and maybe change the gear will be good very close 400rwhp.If you want it nasty sounding..228r on 110lsa sounds sweet to me lol.Tv2 has a slightly higher power curve and you would want to change gear to take better advantage of it from what Ive seen.It was my second choice of cam as well but when I realistically looked at my how much I drive the car in the upper rpms..its wasnt what I needed.
A custom cam inbetween both of these wouldnt be bad at all to consider.
This car sounded great to me:

Im running the Torquer V2, and am happy with the results. I always felt that these cars were not very strong down low anyways... I have never personally driven a 228R/bolt on LS1 car but i've driven a few LS fbodies with smaller cams (224R) and was never really impressed with the lower rpm power. As far as the V2 I would say that it does feel a little soft cruising around at part throttle but if your a 6speed its not that big of a deal. I can still EASILY get on the freeway without going over 2500 rpm at part throttle just leaning on the gas.
I went with the V2 because I saw the power results that many were getting and they sound pretty nasty especially on a 112 or 111 LSA. I think either one you will be happy with, they are both excellent choices for a 6 speed car.
