so i have a 2000z28 that i daily drive the hell out of. 172k+ miles on her. motor runs great and doesnt leak a bit, trans feels ok. i left from a red light and hammered it it got good traction and i hit second and merged and all kids of bad vibrations and noise. pulled over and there was a nice quarter sized hole in the top of the TA diff cover.
so i am thinking rebuild it. i am not sure if i want to go to 373 or 410's. i havent pulled the cover off yet to look at the carnage, i had it towed to a buddies garage and i'll be dealing with it soon.
i am sad but this car doesnt owe me a damn thing. its not going anywhere either. one day i will break it down and build a moster out of it, but that day is far away with 2 young kids right now. so i am thinking stock rebuild with gears rather than going to moser and dropping major coin.
so what do you guys think on gear selection, car is an m6. stock cover vs TA style cover. i have the stock one but could buy another after market one if it makes a difference. also any input on mileage and how much longer shes gonna go. other than needing a little front end work, tie rods alignment type shit she seems to be solid.

personally i wouldnt waste the money in building a stock 10 bolt again or trying to make a 10 bolt a monster.. if you could swing it i would look at the classifieds for used 9 inchs or 12 bolts. or look into the dana rear.. they are alot cheaper then the 9 inch and is stronger

well when it comes time to rebuild the car the way i want the rear will go. i just really dont want to swing that kind of cash right now, if i dont need to. i dont take the car to the track. just some blasts on the street here and there. i know the 10 bolt will never be a monster.

It might be easier to find a complete 10 bolt out of somebody's car and swap in, instead of rebuilding your own. Just a thought if funds are low and you need it back on the road quick.

Well if your not getting a upgrade then theres your answer...rebuild it...or buy used one.

buy used, no more than like $250 IMO. by the time yuo rebuild what you have its gonna be a half way point to even a new dana60 of some sort. quick performance has housings i think for like 500. so with a center and gears and axles about 1k for a 9" set up.

no options out there that arent 2 grand unless put a stock rear in. i wouldnt waste upgrading best thing to do is just keep buying junkyard rears until u got the cash for the 9 inch hopefully you dont keep braking them

Rebuild it. Just dont be stupid and put anything over a 3.73 in it or else it is going to blow again

Just get a junkyard one like everyone has been saying or maybe just do a stock rebuild. From reading your post if you're on pretty much stock power the 10 bolt should last another 100k if you're nice to it :jest: I am almost at 100k right now and mine is fine. I changed the fluid in it last summer and there was hardly any metal flakes in it.

cool. so 373's should be tame enough to not be too twitchy and blow the shit again. i am always on street tires, no drs or anything.

3.73 at the most. 4.10 gears are way too much for a 10 bolt.

well is there anything between 342 and 373?

Why is anything over 3.73 just gonna blow....????
That makes about as much sense too me as wiping before you poop.
I'm thinking about a set of 4:11 my self could you explain.
Thanks in advance

Get another stock 10-bolt from a junk yard and save for a real rear end. Being that you have a manual, your on borrowed time as it is. I would only say put gears in it if you need them to make the car drive decent in the instance that you have say a large cam (like me).

You can rebuild a ten bolt with bearings and all with a 4.10 and as long as you don't try and launch it and just use it on the street it will live but eventually it will pick up whine and start to go out as you beat it.

I rebuild my 10-bolt and one night I pulled out of my friends driveway and lit them up in first snapped it into second and could actually feel that something was off when I did it. Sure enough I put it in 6th and that bitch is whining like crazy now.

The simple fact is, if your M6... look into a 9 inch or S60. I'm building a 9 inch and have to limp my car around and can't even enjoy it.

If your car is stock and the recent rear end that i assume you made last 170 k. Im pretty sure if ypu rebuild or gp back with stock you will be perfectly fine who says your gpnna go 100 k more until yu decide t get a diff daily driver..
