Default Recessed letters

I am trying to paint a pair of Corvette FRCs and changing the color of the Corvette lettering, I have tried taping around them and cutting with an Xacto knife and using some liquid mask but the lines of the letters don't come out as clean as the factory lettering.Any techniques or methods to achieve this? TIA.

Vinal inserts with a low adhesive backing that won't leave a residue would be how I'd do it

Id think the vinal letters would have a much cleaner line im not a professional just given my .02 and take the exacto knife and go around the letter before removing them
