I got free LT1 engine
I just bought a truck and he saw the type of car I drive and he said he would throw in an lt1 engine with the purchase. I know very little about the motor or what I want to do with it. Any advice?

Neat, I always wanted another engine to build outside of the car since it would take me forever but then my camaro blew up. Anyway know what vehicle this lt1 came out of? I believe there are small things to change around when putting an lt1 from one car to another depending on year & car.My idea was to always do heads & cam while it was out and re-do all the internals fresh. What are you looking for? Street car, for the track strictly? But your wallet is the only limit, have fun.

I'd love to build it for my car but I don't even know where to begin or what year car it came out of. I don't even think its worth selling as it sits cause I don't believe I would get much so might as well keep it as a project. I am thinking about ripping it open during my lunch breaks at work and seeing what kind of condition it is in. Building it to eventually swap into my car would be pretty sweet tho without having months of downtime

1st... Before u waste any time.... See if its really an lt1. Lt1 and L99 will look identical from the outside..... Lt1 should have "327" stamped on the block if im not mistaken (sorry im a lil rusty)....

I would contact the guy you bought the truck from and get as much info on it as possible.(car, year, ect.). If he doesnt know see if he has cotact info for the previous owner.

Why would iron heads on a free longblock be "unfortunate", shortblocks are the same, all the iron head motors got the vented opti, even if it is an L99 the intake, timing cover and a bunch of other stuff is useful.
Far as the 327 thing L99s say 327 in some places, so people have to be sure to look at the right spot. Now with an engine out of the car you can do something MUCH simpler, look behind the driver's side head above the bellhousing mounting flange and look for 43 or 57, you rocket scientists can try and figure out which means what.

YOU are more than familiar about why the iron heads are less favorable. examples such as the press in rocker studs that back out,the heat soak and greater chance for detonation, the extra weight As If the ************ isnt heavy enough , Because it's already a money pit and has no known history, so now better head castings are on the grocery list.. Notice I didn't say "free lt1, how unfortunate."
But your right I should have said IMO.
Good free overall score providing it isn't a 4.3 and/or seized.

I will look for any identifying numbers I can find during my lunch at work so we can try and identify exactly what motor it is so I know if I should waste my time or sell the block. It was free either way because its a Marine that is deploying in a week and needed it gone.

My buddy bought a TA last year that ended up having a swapped in iron-head motor. Didn't notice until he sent it out to Wyo-tech to have our buddy do some motor work on it. The motor now has ported heads (yes, the iron ones), comp cam and supporting head internals, port-matched intake, electric water pump, and LT's/full exhaust.

Goes on the dyno in a few weeks, we'll see what kind of power one of the boat anchors can make.
