You can find M1 on sale at WallMart and a few other places for around 4 bucks a qrt., sometimes a bit cheaper. How long are your oil change intervals? You could run the M1 a good bit longer than the Castrol and recoupe some of the extra money- not all but some.

I really don't think it would be worth trying to mix good synthetic with decent "dino", you would just end up with a mediocre semi-synthetic. You could just buy it and save the trouble. I don't think that most semi-synthetics are worth the money.

I've been running M1 0W30 or 0W40 with 7500 mile oil change intervals since the car was new. I just changed out the cam and there were no oil deposits what-so-ever. Looked like a new engine, timing chain was like new. There are plenty of sites to look through on oil. Here is a good one-

There are a few great oils out there, there are alot more mediocre ioils that cost pretty much the same as the good ones. Look through some of the oil analysis and and you will get a idea of the great oils.

Castrol's Syntec Blend is actually very good! I've seen some impressive oil analysis reports with this oil, even though I've always thought in the past that the blends were a ripoff since they contained such a low percentage of actual synthetic oil in them.

In this case i would recommend using their 10w30 over the 5w30 though, because it's thicker at 100C. Plus the fact that a 5w30 that isn't a full synthetic will usually thin out quite rapidly.

will i still be fine putting synthetic in my engine(only 15,500 miles on it)because i have heard you cant switch from dino oil to synthetic because of the gaskets and seepage or is that just older high mileage cars?

You will be fine. There were some leakage problems ages ago when synthetics were in their infancy {maybe even those were rumors?}. I have a 1983 6.2L Deisel Blazer that has something like 100K miles on it. I started running synthetic in it a couple of years ago. It's doing just fine.

I wouldn't run anything less than 10W-30.

A good 0w30 or 5w30 synthetic will work just fine. You get the better flow on startup, plus if it's well built it won't thin out in the heat.

The 0w30 Castrol I use is actually thicker at operating temp than Mobil 1 10w30, in fact this oil starts out almost as a 0w40, and after 6200 miles when I did an oil analysis on it, it had in fact slightly thickened into a 0w40. The wear numbers were incredible, especially lead, which is the indicator of bearing wear.

I run only Mobil 1 or Valvoline synthetic in my cars: 10W30 in my street car, 15W50 (as recommended by Mobil) in my blown Camaro, and 10W30, as recommended by Reher Morrison, in BBC.

With the exception of the German 0W30 Castrol Syntec {the German 0W30 has a red label vs the American made 0W30 which has a yellow label}, I think that M1 products are better than the synthetic Castrol products.

That's only my opinion,,,, do some searching on that website I posted and make your own opinion.

when I bought my Z a year ago, the seller had all of his receipts for M1 synthetic oil changes and this is what I've been using since. Last week I took off my valve covers to paint them RED and the heads looked absolutely beautiful (as clean as a whistle) no deposits or sludge anywhere. I'm sticking with Mobil1 for the life of the engine.
