Pontiac G8 2008-2010 - Part found in oil pan, what is it?

I pulled my oil pan to change a leaky gasket and while pulling it I heard metal part fall into it. Is it part of a tensioner? Is is spring steel, not a bearing.

And found this crap in the oil pickup. The edges are rounded like someone cut it to fit into the pickup but the center was luckily blownout, the car ran and sounded great, no issues.

The oil pan gasket was supposedly done already at a dealership before I bought it. They left a couple nuts off that hold the battery cable to the front of the oil pan and the little plastic covers that go on the sides of the block at the back of the oil pan are missing. And the pan was leaking again, I dont think they replaced the gasket, probably just torqued the oil pan bolts down tighter as they were really tight and the factory sealant used at the front engine cover looks to be original.

I am going to call that dealer and let them hear what I think of their work.

Edit: they must have replaced it as the rivets were not there to secure the gasket to the pan but it did not look like the cradle bolts were taken out to drop the cradle and I could not get the pan out without dropping the cradle and holding the motor in place.

That other shit is a sensor and mesh screen. I dunno wtf happened man that is catastrophic engine failure right there.

A sensor and mesh screen? It is fabric and no idea why it was in there.

The engine ran fine and I expect it to still after a cam swap and tune. when I pull the cam it should tell me if there is other bearing damage. I could send out the filter to have it checked for bearing material.

They will be hearing about it and will hopefully send me the missing parts at least. If this was my car that I took to them they would be in deep shit from me. I bought it used so you know how that goes. Just hope that the bearings are fine, will add a oil pressure gauge to it before I run it again.

What oil pressures are you guys seeing?

Lol it really does look like a sensor in the pic. The little bit of blue looks like the pigtail connector and tbe wire etc

The piece of metal is def spring steel. Can't be a bearing. Must of been some kind of spring/tensioner. Not sure from what.

I think Tainted is right on the piece of plastic being part of a connector.

It was the tensioner spring for the timing chain.

Looks like it is time for a cam swap while I am in there.


It sounds like it is common for the LS3's timing tensioner to come apart.

The LS2 or LS7 is the one to swap it out with and they are cheap, about $11.
