Drag Racing Tech - Tranny slip/torque converter

Can a torque converter cause transmission slippage. Is there something you can do with the toggle switch to shut your tour converter on and off

Simplified version....

Torque converter spins with the motor, spinning the fluid through vanes and fins creating a fluid coupling, spinning the transmission.

What you're thinking of is torque converter lock-up which comes on and off through your computer in the car/truck in overdrive giving better fuel mileage.

As the clutches and bands wear it can cause slipping as well as low or burnt tranny fluid.

To check the fluid level have the car at operating temperature, running, in park, on level ground...pull tranny dip stick, wipe off on a clean white paper towel, reinsert, pull it back out and look at marks on dip stick...should be at full mark.
Now as for the white paper towel....note color of fluid...should be a clear red.
Smell it....does it smell burnt ?

I had a B&M 2500 stall implode on me once years ago....acted like a 5000 true stall :eek: Had to rev the wee out of it just to move.
Had to pull tranny anyway since it threw all the metal through it. Shop cut the converter open LOL :D about half the fins were gone and the other half were bent,twisted,ect.

So what does it mean if oil smells burnt

Smells burnt due to slipping and/or overheating...both bad for a tranny.

I think im having this same problem. My car isn't shifting right. It will stay rev'd high and is hard to accelerate passed first gear. Could thus also be the tranny about to grenade?

If you're talking about a 4ljunkie tranny the trans tuning could be the issue, or the trans is taking a dump. Soon as you start making any real power those transmissions melt like butter in the microwave lol!
