Default Yet another does this sound normal thread. Video clip inside.

First off the car is an 05 GTO with 52k on it. I've looked through many threads and videos and haven't quite heard exactly what it is that my car sounds like. I know these are noisy engines and sound like a sewing machine but does this sound like normal engine noise? I've dealt with a rod knock before but this seems too quiet to be that. The car was a qt low on oil when I bought it but had it changed pretty much right after I bought it. It does it all the time. Warm or just fired after sitting for a day or two.

Exhaust leak maybe is the noise constant I heard it increase with rpm's. Does the noise ever stop? Have you checked the oil for any shiny flakes in it?

sounds like an exhaust leak. I've had both a spun rod bearing and an exhaust leak and it doesn't sound loud enough to be a bearing imo. lift the car up if you can and stick your hand around the headers and see if you feel air blowing.

Noise never stops per se. However after about 4k you can't really hear it over the engine/exhaust. I'll check the oil again. I'm just freaking out hoping its not bottom end related. It doesn't get more intense with extra load i.e. 35 mph in 5th and putting some torque out of it.

Well I got underneath it and used my stethoscope ( a screwdriver) and listened. No noise from the pan so that's reassuring. I'm thinking it's an exhaust leak on the drivers side around the flange or o2 area. Seems to be very relevant there. If not, I hear these cars can get loose rockers? Or maybe a lifter issue? If its anything like my GTP are the rockers torque to yield or are they adjustable?

That's not lifter noise, I've had lifter noise on Grand Prixs and it's much worse.

The noise that you are hearing is most definitely an exhaust leak.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me for sure.
