View Full Version : Question about crank pulley

I have a distinct vibration that is fairly pronounced around 1400-2200 RPM... I suspect the dampener pulley. The entire drivetrain with exception to the transmission is aftermarket, so I'm pretty sure it's nothing in that section. The pulley itself doesn't wobble in or out, the bolt isn't loose, but I do notice the rubber is coming out slightly to one side. Is this common?

How many miles? Replaced before?

I don't think failure is 'common' but it's definitely not abnormal.

I have a nasty all rpm vibration as well, and mine seemed to wobble. I found my crank bolt to be loose! Stupid dealer probably cut a corner when they replaced it.

I put a new bolt in there and still have the issue so I'm going to replace it this weekend. I bought a nice install tool from a forum member so I don't have to use the old bolt to pull the pulley on. Some say the 'old bolt' process works, and service manuals even refer to it, but I read the threads aren't long enough on the bolt to fully seat the pulley. Not only that, you can strip the crank threads trying, then you are fooked. This tool bottoms out in the crank so you are only wrenching down on the tool's threads...

I'm hoping it solves the vibration issue. If not then I'll be looking into the ati superdamper or the fluidamper.

That said, there is a vibration issue that many have in the same rpm range which may be completely unrelated to the damper. My vibes are full time so it's either the pulley or my solid mounts.

Thanks for the reply... 75k miles and looks to be original. Yea I was thinking it might be my solid engine mounts...

I break a lot of bolts but..... I broke that f'n tool off in the crank. That was a fun day.

I just pulled the pulley off my LS2 CTS-V with 23k miles. If someone's interested in buying it off me, let me know. I was eventually going to put up a garage sale thread.

That's not the first time I've heard of that happening.

Fudge! Which tool, there are 2 pretty popular ones out there. I got the one made by hawk

I already know this is going to happen to me now. Murphy hates me.

Wonderful so basically since I'm good at breaking shit sounds like I'll have fun doing mine

I had my dampener replaced at 43K under warranty, so I don't think it it is uncommon at all.

Mine was a cheapo knockoff. What I think happened was when the pulley bottomed out the nut turned the stud. I broke the stud trying to back it out. Maybe a little oil on it before. My results were not typical.

Thanks for the replies... Looks like the IW overdrive is in my future

My stock pulley did wobble. Replacing it with an ATI damper did not get rid of my 2150-2350rpm vibration, nothing has. Your issue may be different though.

Thanks yea I'm thinking it's gonna be this way because of solid mounts

I just took mine on/off with no problems, but I used a longer bolt from Fastenal. 16mm-2.0x 120. That way I didn't run the risk of screwing up the threads of the factory bolt.

Make sure you get a quality 3 jaw 3 ton puller.
