things needed with a ms3 cam??
So im building a lq4 with a ms3 cam.
Thinking about going with the 113 lsa
What I'm wondering is, what all do i need other than cam, lifters, pushrods (what length???) Springs, and retainers?
I'm going with 5.3 truck heads that will be ported, with 2.02 intake valves.
Will the pistons have to be flycut?
Will i have PVC problems??
Plan is H/c/i and nitrous.
No bigger than a 150 shot of course.
Just wanting to know of all possibilities before I tear into it.
I'd rather have all the parts there waiting so i can go ahead and drop the motor in.
All help is greatly appreciated.
You guys are awesome!

At the minimum you need upgraded valve springs and pushrods. There is a decent chance you might have to flycut depending on who is doing the heads. When we do this combination we sink the valves in the head to create extra clearance, if that is not done the set up will not properly clear. I would definitely measure clearance before firing the motor, or just go ahead and fly cut to eliminate the possibility of a problem. We prefer to run a double spring on a cam like this, 2 springs gives some added insurance and it is a big cam. Ideally you will want to measure your pushrod length, there are a lot of things changing here so it would be tough to guess at what you need. Depending on mileage of the motor you might think about doing stuff like oil pump, lifters, and timing chain at the same time. They are right there with the work you are already doing and it takes care of some maintenance that would be tough to get to otherwise. Let me know if we can help out in anyway.

thanks guys!
i know this sounds bad but im trying to be cheap as possible.
i know theres places i cant skimp, and a decent cam/valvetrain is definitely not a place to do so.
i will be doing oil pump and timing chain while im there, but thats about it.
do you have any links, or products that come in kits?
or a list of good parts id need with a final price??
thanks guys!

If you want to PM me your email address I can put together a quote for you once I get back in the shop tomorrow. I don't know if you have the heads already but we offer some pretty aggressive pricing on our ported 2.5 5.3l heads with springs that are made for that cam. I think we may even have a couple sets in stock.

Ms3 will give you better PTV clearance than a Trex would, our Polluter although very close in specs to the MS3 clears without flycutting.
Here is our polluter package which has the option to add all the things you wanted to do.

It is close PTV clearance wise and you could fly-cut for peace of mind and there will be some that will tell you what you are doing is wrong and isn't correct, which is partly true, but you have to do it by your means and what your wallet is comfortable with and we have other customers who are in the same boat as you.
I have a 239/247 110lsa cam in my car and my pistons are not fly cut(my cam is slightly bigger than the Polluter) and it has been ran very hard at the track up to 7500rpm on the stock bottom end with Katech rod bolts with no issues.

i was thinking about going the 5.3 truck heads with the lq4
but that cam makes good numbers without head work
im also thinking about just getting a cheap 5.3
if i went that route would i have to flycut the 5.3??

You could order the ported 5.3 heads from TSP that are made to work with their MS3 and use our Polluter cam. Run it cam only for a while to see how you like it and when you want more power get the 5.3's from them!
Best of both worlds in your situation

I wouldn't put a cam of that size in a 5.3, but no you wouldn't have to fly cut the 5.3 either.
Just to explain one thing so others don't get confused when I say you won't have to fly cut...doesn't mean it will meet some people's PTV clearance standards, it only means that others have run similar to the same size cams without fly cutting with out hurting anything. Just wanted to re-iterate that.
