Carbureted LSX forum - First outing to the track...not so good day.

Well I knew the first outing would be a lot of work but man did things go backwards.

To start off with the secondaries were sticking in my new carb. So, had to borrow one, all I could find was a 1050 BG carb from a buddy. Put it on at the house and we figured we'd definitely have to rejet it. I have a stock cube 6.0 and the carb came off my buddies 540. So we got a bunch of stuff, threw in the truck and drove the 70 miles to the track.

My buddy hooks a vacuum gauge to the carb and tweaks the idle/air and gets it running smooth. I get strapped in and pull up to make my first pass. Launch the car and it seemed like it hooked for a second and then right on the limiter, I stick it 2nd, still on limiter so I lift off. Look in my mirror and white smoke every where. I move over to the edge of track, notice oil pressure is fine, so I limp it back to the trailer. After talking with everyone we assumed it was just tire smoke and since the 26" DR's I had on the car were worn out, we put a set of 28's I had on it.

Pulled a plug and to our surprise it looked lean. We decide to jet up the 1050. Pulled the bowl off and of course the gasket tore, went to the box to get the extras we brought to find we didn't bring them. Un hooked truck from trailer, drive 12-15 miles to find some, get back and replace them.

Pull into burn out box, do burn out, pull to stage, starter tells me to kill the car. Puddle of fluid under car. Get it back to the trailer and find I forgot to put a freeze plug where the speedometer goes. It was blowing fluid out of it. All over the bottom side of the car. Now I think it was doing it first pass too, and probably got under the tires.

Back to the drawing board lol. Just glad we didn't hit the wall.

Been there done that.. my best advice is to try to have everything in good order before you take off for the track. Nights like that will make you crazy.

Hate a bad outing, I pay and take time to get results so I get aggravated when it goes sour.

I learned years ago, if it has tits or wheels it will give you problems at some point. That's hot rodding.

It did suck considering I had to buy a new easy up since no shade at that track. By time I paid for 4 people and the car, fuel in truck, pump gas for car and dinner for my crew, I dropped $400 and didn't even get to make a pass lol.

Don't sweat it man it will be worth it the first time you make a good pass!

its OK the car just had a bit of stage fright. Dont worry they all do. As for carb being lean Of course it would be. everyone always thinks that the # has to be more fuel but remember it is CFM a bigger carb on a small engine will always be lean because you arent making a good enough vacuum signal to maximize the jet in the metering plate. you could probably jet down 10 to 15 sizes with no change. you also could more than likely pull the jet out all together and it wouldnt change either. I have had this problem in the past when I was a kid tuning my old S10 with 327 and a 830 HP nascar spec carb "yikes". you always want to under carb an engine slightly to make it work the most effective.

Hope you get all the bugs out, but that is part of this hobby we all love:).
